I chose early retirement instead of working the 40 40 40 plan and now I'm living stress-free as an Aussie ex-pat living in Thailand with my Thai girlfriend. Our Video Blog covers the typical things we find ourselves doing as we build our life together living in the suburbs of Bangkok. My fiancée is a post-op ladyboy and we have been together since 2009. I finally moved to Thailand in September 2016 because the 8 years of travelling to see her were taking its toll. It's not all a bed of roses living in Thailand and Thai people do suffer from illness just as the rest of us. Chanya told me yesterday that our good friend Priya is in the hospital with suspected lymphoma. We can only wish her a speedy recovery. but she does seem to be in high spirits which is always a good thing.

It's that special time of year where the Thai's celebrate and pay respect to the goddess of water after the rainy season. Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, so the exact date of the festival changes every year.
The name could be translated as "to float a basket," and comes from the tradition of making Krathong or buoyant, decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river.
The beauty contests that accompanies the festival is known as "Nopphamat Queen Contests" and you will see many beautiful young women adorned in bright and traditional Thai costume which is one of the best parts of the festival.
Although the loudspeakers were at full volume tonight, we still enjoyed our evening even if we were significantly deaf at the end of it!

I make an effort to visit the Bangkok motor expo every year and I managed to con Robert Mac in Asia and his charming wife to join me for this years roundup of everything on 2 wheels and 4.

One of the highlights of Bangkok entertainment is the yearly Motor Expo. My mate Pek at Shop Steaks gave me some free tickets for this year's entertainment so I invited Robert and his wife to join me. As with past years, the traffic getting into the parking area was crazy. I really don't know who comes up with the traffic routing plans, but they really need to find someone who has 1/2 a clue next time.
As with all these expo's, the eye candy and sexy girls on the stands were worth the admission, so it was a bonus to get in for free this time. Every year there is always something new to feast your eyes on. Although I'm not looking to buy a new car yet, there were a few models that caught my eye. The MG range has been something I've come to like and maybe in a couple of years, I may get one of those. They really don't have a good national coverage yet, but they are getting more popular.
After a bit of wandering around, we came to the bulk of the motorcycle dealers. There were a few new names on display and also the classics like Harley Davidson, Triumph and Aprilla. Alas, the prices of those brands keep people wishing, but the general interest was for Kawasaki, Honda and Yamaha.

Even though we are hosting the bi-weekly meetups in Bangkok, there will always be some people who can't make it along. This doesn't mean I won't make a special trip in, so when Jeremy bounced me a message, I took the opportunity to go back into Bangkok to hang out for the afternoon. He was in the Asok area and suggested we meet at Benjakitti Park which is conveniently located close to the BTS and the MRT lines. Today I chose to take the MRT given that both lines have a station at Bang Wa which is where I usually grab the BTS.
Benjakitti Park was developed from Tobacco pond area 200x800 meters, built by digging and reclamation. This park was part of the project replacement area from resolutions in the government of Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun. Name “Benjakitti” was given by Queen Sirikit during the opening. Benjakitti Park has a landmark symbol called “Pathumthani” near the pond. It was opened in 2004 (on land formally owned by the Tobacco Monopoly) to honour the 72nd birthday of Queen Sirikit.

I must say, there are 2 times each year when Thailand becomes a really festive place. The first is a Songkran and the second is Loi Krathong. Don't misunderstand me, it is in now was second place to Songkran as it is probably the best time of the year because the temperatures start to cool down and we enter the peak tourist season.
