A Voicemail To Bristol Virginia City Manager Randy Eads I need your help: Our landfill opened in 1998 in an abandoned limestone quarry. Due to the nature of a quarry, it collects water which drains to the bottom of the trash pile. Garbage at the bottom is boiling emitting toxic gases such as methane, hydrogen sulfide and benzene along with a horrible odor. A growing number of residents are complaining of the constant toxic odor traveling around the city and surrounding areas, and side effects of headaches, brain fog, nausea, vomiting, burning eyes and fatigue to name a few. Even with these side effects being reported, the EPA states there is no health concern but we have gotten the attention of Erin Brockovich, which could be good news. The toxic odor has become so strong over the past year it is now entering our homes and requiring air purifiers, which many of our residents cannot afford. I'm no scientist, I'm no engineer, but a landfill shouldn't be causing an entire town to smell like a dead skunk cooking in a volcano and we shouldn't have to deal with constant headaches and nausea just to go outside, or worse, be subjected to it inside our homes.
