Our son Alexander the Great (check the birth certificate, yep...) (we call him Xander), is 6. He is 100% boy. By that I mean he is the kind of kid who will jump off of stairs and challenge himself to go one higher each time. He will bonk his head into the couch cushions to elicit laughter, and sleep in his baseball uniform despite the fact there's two pounds of dirt caked onto it after a game. Like I said, 100% boy. Each weekend he asks me, "Daddy, can we go to F.I.T. (Functionised Integrative Therapeutics and use the ARX? Each weekend I tell him okay. To him it is fun to push himself to new limits. He enjoys achieving new things and persists at challenges he falls short of. When he was 5, he attempted to pick up a 10 lb medicine ball off the ground. He was unable to. Day after day he attempted it until one day it came off the ground. Then the goal was to get it up to his shoulder. Then it was to get it over his head. Then it was to squat with it over his head. As a dad I encourage him and guide him to the best of my ability. I do not demand he does the ARX each weekend. I do not demand he does balance work on the vibration plate or demand he hits off the batting tee daily, etc. I simply ask he be a kid and smile and have fun. Somewhere we were once all like this. Then life happened. Some of us remain like this and each individual I see like his is successful in so many areas in life. They spend 99% of the day smiling. Their life is full and enriched with happiness. Why do adults become so negative? Why do adults find it easier to quit or not even try when a 6 year old persists until he achieves his small goal?
