Leave it to Werner Herzog to make sublime cinema from what might otherwise be relegated to little more than a dry news report. These are Chapters 7 and 8 (out of 13) of his "Lessons of Darkness" (Lektionen in Finsternis), released in 1992.

These fires were started by the Iraqi military when they retreated from Kuwait in January and February 1991; between 605 and 732 wells were set aflame, along with several oil lakes and «fire trenches». The fires were extinquished between April and November of that year.
BUT the facts of the matter are really beside the point; the film intentionally decontextualises what we see on the screen from the real-life events, and the images speak for themselves.
P.S. unfortunately, this video is blocked in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
