Should you sell out of the market in your 401k and move into ultra conservative investments like cash or a money market?

For us there are 2 simple questions to ask....

1. Are you retiring tomorrow? (Yes/No)
If the answer is no, then you have half the answer

2. Are you retiring in less then 10 years? (Are you 55 or older) (Yes/No)

If this answer is also no, then selling out of the market in your 401k in short is just plain stupid

You can look back at any*** rolling 10 year period in the market, even starting before the financial crisis or even at the high of the dot com bubble, and guess what?

The market has always been higher, more importantly you want the market to move, you are automatically dollar cost averaging in the market on the way up and down, so while most are selling out in a panic, the investors who ride the waves up and down will benefit in the long term!
