David Kaiser's Quantum Legacies -- Nukes, SETI, and Quantum Entanglement
#QuantumMechanics #ArtificialIntelligence #Entanglement MIT Professor David Kaiser returns to the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE podcast to discuss his captivating new book, “Quantum Legacies: Dispatches from an Uncertain World.”
Interviewed by Brian Keating, who dubs Kaiser “the world’s most likable physicist,” Kaiser shares his unbridled enthusiasm for both physics and the history of science.
00:08:33 The influence of Dr. Stephen Hawking on physicists and authors. 00:20:13 Collaboration is the key to staying on the cutting edge of science. 00:28:02 An enthusiastic and poetic explanation of quantum entanglement. 00:42:53 It’s crucial to use an open-source approach to fighting COVID-19. 00:50:53 MIT is ahead of the online learning curve - how far can that go? 01:01:15 One variable of the Drake Equation is a product of the nuclear age. 01:09:25 Questions INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE asks of all authors.
David Kaiser is a professor of both Physics and History of Science at MIT. He is also Associate Dean for Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing at MIT’s Schwarzman College of Computing. His previous book “How the Hippies Saved Physics: Science, Counterculture, and the Quantum Revival” was named Book of the Year (2012) by Physics World magazine. A list of Kaiser’s scientific articles, editorials, and other interviews is available here: http://web.mit.edu/dikaiser/www/DKResearch.html#HistArticles

#Astrobiology #PullitzerPrize #RichardPowers
Special Father’s Day Episode! Richard Powers is an American novelist whose works explore the effects of modern science and technology. His novel The Echo Maker won the 2006 National Book Award for Fiction. He's won many awards over the course of his career, including a MacArthur Fellowship. Powers has published 14 novels and has taught at the University of Illinois and Stanford University. He won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Overstory.
Powers’ latest book is Bewilderment in which, The astrobiologist Theo Byrne searches for life throughout the cosmos while single-handedly raising his unusual nine-year-old, Robin, following the death of his wife. Robin is a warm, kind boy who spends hours painting elaborate pictures of endangered animals. He’s also about to be expelled from third grade for smashing his friend in the face. As his son grows more troubled, Theo hopes to keep him off psychoactive drugs. He learns of an experimental neurofeedback treatment to bolster Robin’s emotional control, one that involves training the boy on the recorded patterns of his mother’s brain…
With its soaring descriptions of the natural world, its tantalizing vision of life beyond, and its account of a father and son’s ferocious love, Bewilderment marks Richard Powers’s most intimate and moving novel. At its heart lies the question: How can we tell our children the truth about this beautiful, imperiled planet?

We have discussed LIGO on this channel many times, including interviews with two of its three Nobel Prize-winning leaders, Rainer Weiss and Barry Barish. I have learned more from them than you could imagine. Today, however, we will not talk about LIGO as a gravitational wave detector (as if that weren't great enough) but as a way of detecting dark matter. So buckle up and get ready for a ride Into the Impossible!
