I love Polybar because it's simple to configure and really great results can be achieved with minimal effort. That's why it was my bar of choice when it came to customising my Fluxbox installation.
However, out of the box it doesn't offer modules that allow you to minimise windows to the bar, or to add a drop-down menu.
Luckily this is all easily achievable using a custom script called polywins along with some xdotool jiggary-pokery.
In this video I take you through how I achieved what I believe to be a very good result.

Antix Linux - The Lightweight Distro That Packs a Punch!
Antix is a fully loaded Debian Buster distro designed to run on older machines with as little as 256MB of RAM or as a live usb install.
However, there's no reason why it needs to go on older hardware when it also runs great on newer hardware.
Like MX Linux it is a child of the old Mepis Linux, which will go down in Linux history as one of the all time great distros. In fact it still has the feel of Mepis to those who used it
This video looks at a default install on virtualbox, which results in a very cleanly configured icewm desktop with the rox file browser. Other options include JWM, herbsluftwm and fluxbox
Overall this is a great little distro for beginners and expereinced users alike. It contains the tools that new users can turn to when they need to leverage the power of the command line, but doesn't impose automated options on those who would prefer to configure a system for themselves.
Well worth a try. Here is the download page:

Ubuntu Mate 20.04 is a distribution for human beings in the sense that it doesn't require you to be a Linux guru, and that hasn't changed in the core distribution over the last 16 years.
Ubuntu Warty Warthog was released in 2004, which coincidentally was the year I first started using Linux. At the time I was amazed at how different, and how much easier it was than the other distros that existed at the time. I'd go as far as to say that if Ubuntu hadn't launched in 2004 I very much doubt I would have stayed with Linux.
So what's this latest LTS release about. Well as expected it's a well put together, solid distro. There's been lots of under the hood improvements
and these just add to what was already, in mind mind at least, the best Ubuntu flavour and the real successor to the original Ubuntu desktop experience
Give it a try, even if you only fire it up in a virtual machine

So you like Arch but dislike systemd? No problem, Artix could be for you.
If you're looking for an Arch based distro with a different init system - runnit, openrc or S6, Artix has them all.
In this video I take the OpenRC community GTK version for a spin (mate and lxde).
It's a decent fork of Arch for those who dislike systemd, but for me personally there's little reason to move. That's simply because
systemd isn't a big issue for me at the moment. However, I remain to be convinced otherwise :-)
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

Endeavour OS, in my opinion, is the best Arch distro that currently exists. I'm biased of course, but my opinion is based on 14 month of continuous use and zero problems.
In fact Endeavour OS has helped change my mind about how suitable Arch systems are for brand new users, and I would now say that, whatever your level of skill or experience, the chances are you will get on great with Endeavour.
Update it once a week, use the wiki and friendly community to increase your knowledge, and customise it to suit yourself.
This video is a showcase of Endeavour's latest release, which I can find nothing to criticise.
In summary, what are you waiting for? Just install Endeavour and stop hopping :-)
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

LinuxFX, or WindowsFX as it seems to go by both names, is an Ubuntu based distro fully themed to look like Windows 10.
To be fair, it does this job really well. If you want to run Linux but love the look and feel of Windows 10, then this is for you.
But how many people actually fall into that camp? Not that many I would guess.
Yes, you've guessed it, this isn't one of my favourites. But it is well done and it is an example of just how much you can customise Linux.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

When I last looked at i3 I was very new to tiling window managers and I just couldn't find my comfort level in i3. My fault entirely, because when I subsequently jumped to BSPWM I forced myself to use it for several months and ended up loving it.
Looking back I believe I didn't really give i3 a fair chance, so it deserves a second look. Of course, we have the wayland thing eventually threatening
the continuation of x window managers at some point in the future and that has been on my mind as well. There's Sway of course, but I didn't feel ready to review that until I'd returned to i3. So here is my video doing just that.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

GUI Alternatives to the Linux CLI and 5 Tools for Monitoring and Troubleshooting your system
The command line has become the bread and better of many Linux users, who turn to it as the first option when they need to gather information or troubleshoot their system. And it is incredibly powerful!
However, what do you use if you are new to Linux or you simply don't have the skills or confidence to use the command line?
Luckily it's not a problem. Linux has a range of GUI applications that can be used as an alternative to the CLI to manage and maintain your system.
This video looks at 5 applications I found today, but I'm sure there are many more.

If you use a full blown desktop environment you probably won't need one of these, but I use a window manager without a system tray. So a small script that shows my laptop battery status in my bar is really helpful.
The thing is, I'm no scripting guru, just a desktop user who likes to fiddle. But on the basis of 'if I can do it anyone can' I thought I'd show you the process I went through.
Bash scripting can be really simple. It can be complex as well of course, but what I do is just cover the basics.
I go through creating the script and testing it, and I've left my mistakes in here so you can see the entire process.
I'm sure there's better ways of doing this, but this works so in my mind it's 'good enough'.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

The latest version of Feren OS was released in January 2020. It's based on Ubuntu Bionic and also draws on the Linux Mint repositories.
For the first time it uses the Plasma desktop rather than cinnamon, and the developer has heavily customised it's look and feel.
From the simple install, through to the clean look and the snappy performance I was very impressed.
It's not a distro that I've looked at before but I would have no hesitation recommending it to new and/or experienced users.
It's also great to see a British distro out there in the Linux ecosystem - not something we see that often.
