Detached from Truth— Lives are Shipwrecked Guarding the truth is our chief responsibility as we see the falling away from the truth that characterizes the end of days. To not guard the truth leads to “shipwreck”; we can get into a state of not being moored and anchored by the truth as we see when Paul uses this word to describe those who thrust away sound doctrine and try to sail on their own and not carefully guarding Christ's way, truth and life. 1 Timothy 1:19-20 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. What can cause a soul to be shipwrecked? False teaching and belief in false doctrines about Christ. That was one of Christ's constant warnings. When the world darkens, culture crumbles, and truth dies—you know the end of the world is near. It is then that Jesus warned that the church would fill up with fruitless counterfeits. When that happens it is time for believers to brace for the storm that we know is coming. The waves will only increase. Spiritual darkness will only deepen as deceptions grow. These are days when we who know and love the Lord Jesus should reach into our hearts and grab onto the anchor line of truth as contained for us in God's Word, and feel it strongly holding us securely—tugging us homeward. Listen to Jesus as we open again to Luke 21:11 where we see that one of the signs of His Coming is when we see the onslaught of global pestilences. Luke 21:11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. There have always been diseases, plagues, and pestilences—but never have they been global until the advent of Global Travel. Think about it—most carriers of a plague would die before they got very far up until the 19th century with steam engines. Then with air travel in the 20th century—it is now possible to harbor a plague or pestilence, board a flight and land before you get to the final stages and thus expose everyone around you to that plague. Look at what Jesus also said in the same context. Mark and Matthew capture this same message. Only they also record that Jesus said something ominous about how powerful these pestilences will be. Mark 13:20 And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days. Matthew 24:22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. Remember the ominous proportion of this future pestilence being an extinction-level event, and remember the nearly self-limiting nature of ancient travel speeds—no one could live long enough to spread these plagues globally until the 20th century. Listen to an article from the New Yorker Magazine : " The vicious avian flu that has killed dozens of people in Vietnam, Thailand, and elsewhere in the region has caused the deaths of hundreds of millions of animals in nearly a dozen Asian countries in the past two years and could kill millions of people if it becomes capable of spreading efficiently among humans. No such virus has ever spread so quickly over such a wide geographical area, and, unlike most viruses, this one has already affected a more diverse group than any other type of flu, and it has killed many animals previously thought to be resistant." One farmer whose chickens were killed by the virus says, "It's so hard to watch. One day, they're all alive and healthy-the vets were here the week before to check them and the next day they're dying by the thousand. It happened so quickly. They started shivering, thousands of them at once. And then they started to fall. Every one of them. They just fell over, dead." Scott Dowell, the director of the Centers for Disease Control's Thailand office, tells Specter, "The world just has no idea what it's going to see if this thing comes. When really. It's when. I don't think we can afford the luxury of the word 'if' anymore... The clock is ticking. We just don't know what time it is." Women energized by grace love their children. That is what Titus 2:4 says. We are going to see how to love children with love they can feel this evening. But before we do that we need to ask why are we even here tonight? Why do we even sacrifice another hour-plus to gather in this building and study God's Word? The answer is that we desire to be a faithful part of Christ's church! You see, this evening you and I are part of something big, something grand, something that dwarfs all our broken-down cars, lost jobs, bad health, work pressures, social problems, or even personal loneliness…this evening through Jesus Christ, you and I are a part of what God has chosen as His priority in the Universe. We are in partnership with GOD. Think of that. You and I are equity holders in something that will never end, never fail, never decay--we are a vital part of Christ's church! God’s plan to work in the world is through His church. Why not remind yourself of that by looking at three passages of Scripture with me tonight. In fact you may even want to pencil in three words on the pages of your Bibles. The first word is MISSION. • Each of us in Christ's church has a mission that Paul summarized as “Pleasing God” (I Thessalonians 4:1) “Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God” (NKJV). • Our mission is accomplished by the proclamation of a message Paul summarized as “the Gospel of Grace” (Acts 20:24) “But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God (NKJV). This message of grace—that God did everything possible to be done and anyone can come to Him merely by faith seems impossible. • But the most amazing part is that God’s plan to do all this through us is by a method spelled out in Titus 2. Paul summarized this plan as men and women energized by God’s grace to live in a way that is otherwise impossible. A Personal Sabbath Rest IS CHRIST'S PRESCRIPTION FOR HEALING THE HURRY SICKNESS OF THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH As the world around us accelerates, our energies wane. But we are not defenseless victims. The following suggestions will help replace frenzy with peace and rest. A Personal Sabbath Rest: Helps us Find Stillness as we bow before God - “Be still and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10 NIV). Before hurrying past that profound command, let’s turn it over in our minds several times. Cease striving and know that I am God. Stand silent! Know that I am God! [TLB] Let be and be still, and know—recognize and understand—that I am God. [AMP] “Give in”, he cries, “admit that I am God.” [Moffat] “Stop fighting, “ he says, “and know that I am God.” [TEV] Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above everything. [The Message] However we may prefer to read it, this is an emphatic imperative addressed to God’s own people. People of every race, color, culture, and era…people of any level of maturity and age…people who are employed or unemployed, single or married, with or without children, all people whose God is the Lord. We are commanded to stop (literally)…rest, relax, let go, and make time for Him. The scene is one of stillness and quietness, listening and waiting before Him. Such foreign experiences in these busy times! Nevertheless, knowing God deeply and intimately requires such discipline. Silence is indispensable if we hope to add depth to our spiritual life. It “guards the fire within our souls.”… “silence makes us pilgrims,” writes one who advocates protracted, uninterrupted periods of quietness. It sharpens the keen edge of our souls, sensitizing us to those ever-so-slight nudgings from our heavenly Father. Noise and words and frenzied, hectic schedules dull our senses, closing our ears to his still, small voice and making us numb to His touch.
