Open-Minded Independent Violinists: did you know it could be just 1/3 of a millimetre between YOU and that ultra-full sound many violinists dream to bring into their solo parts and Chamber ensembles?
I've just moved the bridge ca 1/3 of a millimetre! Can you spot the difference?
My mind was blown away! You will find the sound recorded a couple of hours ago on the same instrument, the same piece by J.S.Bach for Violoncello Solo, the previous video posted on my professional page. (Yeah, I have a few pages, this one is mainly for yachts, sunsets and Captain Strawberry's marine adventures).
This makes it the perfect Basso for those animated continuos about which Mattheson wrote that on a Viola, Violoncello da Spala or Violoncello the Bass is so much easier to play than "on the bigger machines".
If you still don't have the album, get it now 100% for free on my website. Why? Just a little gift to you for your following! You have nothing to lose by getting, uhm?

Depending on where you live, rhythmical liberty with the Violoncello da spalla can be either welcome or taboo. But...
Rhythmical liberty in Baroque music can be stylistically required to enhance the expressive potential and emotional depth characteristic of the era, especially in unaccompanied solo music, or at pedal point like in this shorts#.
This period emphasized dramatic contrast, ornamentation, and affective expressiveness, all of which necessitated flexibility in rhythm. Musicians were expected to employ rubato, varying the tempo for expressive purposes, and to embellish melodies spontaneously.
This freedom allowed for a dynamic interplay between strict and fluid time, mirroring the rhetorical aims of Baroque art to captivate and move the listener. Consequently, the rigid adherence to a metronomic pulse would undermine the intended affective nuances and dramatic intensity that define Baroque musical aesthetics. The metronomic precision might be more suitable for the music of the later period.

Violoncello da spalla: smaller body, bigger bang. You may agree that mastering the violin is very difficult. In fact, it is so difficult that the majority of people will never achieve any level of mastery, especially considering that in music, "mastery" is not a destination but rather a journey. This does not make it any easier, as others still expect you to reach the level of Ivry Gitlis or higher. And this is where the da spalla comes in. Firstly, people do not expect you to conform to anything. Secondly, if you can play the violin or viola even a little bit, you already have enough technique to play the da spalla. By simply differentiating yourself from others, you can achieve more. #shorts

As a professional violinist, violist, or cellist who loves Bach, you might argue that it is hardly possible to play even worse. You could assert that this playing is devoid of solid technique, good intonation, metronomically correct rhythm, and refined artistic ideas. If that's you, I agree. You are right. I am just an author of the book on Da Spalla and luthier, not a musician.
I look forward to hearing it in your skilled hands. Thankfully, I've made this instrument for a number of world-famous violin soloists and conductors who actually did justice to it and made it accepted on the cultural scene.
I am going the extra mile to help young musicians actually experience this instrument LIVE rather than study it only on YouTube. This is a snippet from the recent practical Da Spalla LIVE workshop.
You might ask, "What's in it for me?" or "Who cares?"
The good news is, music lovers and intellectuals care about culture, and these highly educated audiences understand that without musicians like you, they would not have any musical culture at all. Other than something perhaps very primitive, made of three chords and a ton of percussions.
Mendelssohn brought back Bach to life. Casals brought back his Cello Suites. You are bringing back to life the cello of Bach's choice.
These highly intellectual people understand that without musicians like you, we would not have much of the music today some people consider indispensable. Dowland, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel's operas, not even Bach.
Radio hosts, TV presenters, local journalists begin talking about you because reviving cultural traditions resonates with their core values. And this may have a positive effect on your musical life, which in turn may have a positive effect on your family life.
Yet, with this said, in this video, you can enjoy the least skilled playing on this gorgeous instrument. Just imagine what YOU could do with YOUR solid technique, and YOUR artistic and personal maturity.
An ocean of opportunities is just one click away.
The question is, will YOU click? Or only the others?
