SABA Breisgau 8 pt. 2. Checking the B+ lines without powering up the set.
The first step in the process of restoration is to check that the high voltages (B+) are getting to where they should in the circuit, and also whether any resistors and/or coils in the paths are correct. I use Adobe Reader extensively as a means of marking off the parts of the circuit I have checked.
Using only a multimeter reading resistance, we can actually get a lot checked, all without adding power to the radio. It is safer, easier and more conclusive to do the initial circuit checking this way.
In this video I give a rather detailed description of how I go about it, so I hope you get something from this.

The Nordmende Phonosuper radio that I restored recently (see link to playlist below) came with an unusual 'appendage' at the back which I failed to identify at first. It turned out to be an amplifier module that is quite interesting. It was used in the Decca RP 205 record player from 1964, and was obviously added here to give the radio's phono function a stereo output. It uses an ELL80 output tube, which is a dual pentode in one package, making the construction of a push-pull stage quite simple, albeit at low power. The restoration of this little amp was fun, and the result, while quite useless for any hifi use, is perfect when used as a guitar amp. Enjoy. The number of capacitors that need to be replaced on these sets is surprisingly small. This is due to the fact that most of the capacitors are ceramics, which generally hold out very well and do not need to be replaced. This does not mean that the few that are replaced do not make a huge diference. They do. This set proves it. Another sticky point is the selenium rectifier. In this case it is actually a single diode. This needs to be replaced with a silicon diode (1N4007 or similar) and a series resistor added to compensate for the very low voltage drop across the new diode. Some trial and error replaces circuit theory here. But hey, it works! Enjoy the video. The first attempt at making a power supply for the DIY tube tester project was fine, but did not leave me completely happy. I found the option of using a boost converter a little unsettling as it was a cheap and potentially unreliable device. I decided to go for using a regular power transformer with incorporated heater supply windings as it would make life a lot simpler. This is that second attempt, which, quite frankly is much better.
