Retropie Raspberry Pi Arcade Project: Part 2 - Game System Controlled WS2812 RGB Buttons
So while I wait till I can go back home and work on my retro arcade project I though I could at least get some more software/hardware features that I want hammered out. I found some really cheap clear/white led lit arcade buttons so I snapped them up and thought to myself: "these must have individually controllable RGB LEDs installed in them".
I've played with WS2812 serial RGB LEDs before using an arduino so my idea is to have custom color palettes that are tied to button mappings that activate whenever you open an emulator in retropie. This way only buttons that are used are illuminated and the colors will give an intuitive hint at what function is mapped to it. ... Plus it looks really cool. For instance pulling up an SNES game will color the buttons in a super famicom color scheme and etc. All buttons are white while sitting at the main menu and off when the system turns off obviously.
I've demonstrate the final working setup consisting of three parts in this video: a bash script that determines which console system emulator is currently running, a python script that that is then called to send a control signal about the currently running system over digital outputs, and the connected arduino that reads this control signal and sets the colors accordingly as well as watches the buttons so it can timeout and display a rainbow pattern if no button is pressed for more than 30 seconds while on the menu. Everything works great and I cant wait to wire up all the final parts once I get time and everything arrives in the mail.
This can all even be expanded in the future to do something crazy like read the game rom name, pull up some marquee/box artwork and display it on an LCD while you are playing a game. The sky is the limit (and my wallet/time)!

I'm always up to check out new bluetooth earbuds. I literally use tws buds daily while I work so when Eleror reached out to me to see if I wanted to check out their new budget model I gave an emphatic yes. And when I say budget, they come in at a respectable $30 which isn't so cheap that I fear bad quality and performance right off the bat but also not so expensive that I start to consider buying name brand buds instead. So imo this potentially falls into the perfect stocking stuffer category (just in time for the holiday season here) assuming they live up to a certain level of expectation. Let's put them through the wringer and see exactly what your $30 gets you nowadays in the bluetooth earbud world.

Happy holidays to everyone, my gift to you is a three part series/tutorial on how to backlight, bivert, and program a digital RGB controller for the gameboy DMG.
In this first part I attempt to fix the missing vertical columns of pixels along the left side of the screen due to aging adhesive on the ribbon cable. Also in a nerve wracking couple of minutes I remove the rear reflective and polarizing filter layers so I can proceed with inverting and backlighting the LCD in the next part of this series.

In this video I give an in depth look at the writing tablet Banggood had generously given me to review. If you don't have the time to watch my first time experience with the tablet, below you will find my summary of my experience using it for the past few weeks.
Pros:
- Good price to size ratio
- High contrast easily visible in bright or dim lighting conditions
- Replaceable battery
- Large but light, easy to hold
Cons:
- Glares off screen coating can be distracting
- Can't save images (saving to an sd card would be awesome)
- Can only erase entire screen (erasing last stroke would help)
So all in all this tablet will definitely get a lot of use as my note/schematic/diagram reference pad from now on. Although it's a bummer not being able to directly save the images I always can snap a pic of it on my phone before I erase so it's not a big deal, especially for the price.

I've been hearing a number of people online complaining about their joy con sticks developing a drifting issue so when Jemall offered to send a set in for me to do a joystick replacement tutorial video for the switch I thought it would be a good resource for others. I've already replaced the shells with clear ones so I know my way around the inside but let's see if we can swap out the sticks without having to undo any of the other ribbon cables (or even disconnect the battery!).
