Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes. 2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and only recently came out of a depression. 3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I was demonetized by Google years ago as part of their culling of small accounts. Class action lawsuit was initiated. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3-4 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown. July 21/22. I never do covers anymore, with rare exceptions for some of my favorite songs that I grew up with that helped develop me as a guitarist. This is from UFO, featuring Michael Schenker on guitar, 1976. You want to learn about effective bending? This is your lesson. First take is pro audio, second take at 43:45 the street audio version begins. UFO is my favorite rock group, from years 1974-1978. I learned all their songs by the age of 18. Schenker was an influence on players like Van Halen, Kirk Hammett, Dave Mustaine, Adrian Vandenberg, Randy Rhoads, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, etc. The entire neo-classical genre (Mostly originated from Germany) has Schenker as its indisputable pivotal head, even more so than Ritchie Blackmore, who was also a big fan of Schenker. There is no one else in the history of lead guitar that has consistently created more memorable and melodic guitar solos than Schenker. You could excise every solo from every album he did between 1974 and 1989 and put them in a time capsule, without even being attached to the songs at all. Today, I could recreate all his solos from memory alone, that's how memorable they are. I can think of no one else that has this distinction. Schenker was a huge influence on me. Most notably in the legato dept. He's still the most melodic guitarist alive. No one comes close to pure melodicism in their solos as he did. It's Mozart level. He used to construct his solos as compositions within the songs, and songs would often be worked around his solos. Often times the solos are far better than the songs themselves. The melody line of 'martian landscape' is a great example of lyrical playing, with minimal playing and a brilliant use of double stop bends, up and down again. The end solo of this song can be repeated indefinitely, and it never gets old. It was a perfect ending to this album. Another notable bender is David Gilmour, but even his work pales to the bends on this song in a purely melodic framework.
