DIY Partscaster Episode 5 - EVH FrankenSniffer Strat - Striped Headstock
At some point in all lives of persons, I suppose you must assemble some EVH Frankenstrat guitar. I saw these painted bodies on eBay from China, as you may have, and decided this will be easy way to quickly fulfill task and move on with life. Surprisingly, while body is piece of crap, paint job is astonishing. Seriously. Layers of paint, tape job, and even locations of stripes and wear marks are hand made with absolute artistry. If person that painted this body applied this amazing work to a high quality body, they would be able to sell these for fortune of money. With this, I will attach a cheap pre-made neck, cheap humbucker pickups, and best quality tremolo that cost twice as much as body. ?

2. Kahler 2300 series tremolo with Heavy Arm and Heavy Tension Springs and Wide String Hook (was going to install Gotoh GE1996T for more authentic look, but bizarre body routing does not allow adequate support for pivot stud inserts...and Kahler is better anyway)

As you may see in latest project, I will attempt to make this short scale fretless bass using least amount of money possible. Wood is coming from big box store. Center neck-through section is made from five pieces of oak, and body sides made from pieces of poplar...all glued together. Why? Just for curiosity, and because I have Lowe's credit card. Fretboard is piece of ziricote from Keim Lumber (they have very nice guitar wood products for good price). Bridge and tuners shipped direct from China...cheapest hardware I could find on planet. Pickups are also super cheap fake Music Man humbuckers...so I will use two. Electronics will include simply one CTS volume, one CTS tone, Switchcraft 3-way toggle pickup selector, and Stratocaster type output jack mounted on backside of bass. A Stew Mac Dual Action Hot Rod truss is being installed, and nut will be made from Graph Tech Tusq XL black blank. Finish will be done, if bass does not go into trash bin, with cans of cheap spray paint.
Bonus footage included of making workbench from 2x4s and plywood in underground wood processing facility of Sniffer Customs. Bench is better than squatting on ground to cut wood.
Do not copy techniques you may see in my videos. I do a few things with tools that are unsafe, and many things with guitar building that are done to save time...because life is short...and it's usually past my bedtime.

In third clip of this series, I will show installation of new frets. I will also tear out quite a lot of wood and inlay material from fretboard. Some good advice: if old frets are glued in slots, do not skip step of heating them with solder iron to melt glue before removal...even if it is past your bedtime and you are desperate to complete task. Also in this clip I install set of Gotoh SG381-07 MGT Cosmo Black locking tuners. These are drop in replacement/no requirement of drill, and Gotoh is very good value for price.
Additional lessons from this particular job:
1. An experiment with using fret hammer to install frets was disaster. Now I understand why I see guitar builders using a sanding beam to level frets after installation...because hammering in soft nickel frets...in my case...leaves them extremely uneven. I had to remove frets (tearing out more wood and inlay material), and do job over from start. I went back to using drill press with fret caul, which installs them level without need to grind down BRAND NEW frets with sanding beam...only minor tweaks. Taking time to radius sand fretboard and clean fret slots make installation fool-proof with a caul/press.
2. Don't assume guitar manufacturer uses appropriate size neck mounting screw. When cleaning fret slots, I could detect neck mounting screw holes inside of slot. I thought maybe they have only drilled them too deep, and forgot about this observation. When I re-installed neck, I did not check length of screws. Screws hit bottom of new (perfectly installed/glued) fret, and popped it up. Instead of replacing fret, I dropped some CA glue into neck screw holes from back...then levelled this one fret. Very unfortunate mistake...due to impatience on my part/inattention to detail. Neck screws were replaced with shorter ones. Yet another "measure once, cut twice" incident...a price paid for always being in a hurry, haha.

In video six of series, I re-install StayTrem stainless arm to tremolo, and re-assemble unit using all stainless fasteners. Tremolo tension adjustment screw is replaced with socket head stainless bolt and nylon washer for easier adjustments. Vintage white tip on arm was replaced with black tip. My plan was to try LaBella Bass VI FLAT wound stings on this setup, but core of one of these snapped like a twig during installation. That's okay, I think wound rounds are better suited for this Bass VI. Flat wounds also had wrapping on ends that did not play well with locking tuners. $50 thrown into trash; new 767-6S round wounds installed, back to business. Saddle intonation screws on StayTrem bridge were replaced with socket head stainless bolts with nylon washers for easier adjustment. ?
Background noise is Ibanez Artcore AS73 semi-hollow, played through NUX Solid Studio IR/Amp Sim, Boss RT-20 rotary pedal, NUX Time Core Delay, and DigiTech Polara Reverb.

Pros:
1. Sounds pretty good.
2. Black.
3. No "LOW" control knob that would offend someone offended by too many knobs.
4. Cheap.
5. Skull and Crossbones (on fire) image.
Cons:
1. Does not say "METAL" anywhere in name.
2. Unnecessarily big.
3. Volume at 100% is compare to Metal Zone at 50%.
4. Power input hole on side of pedal.
5. No "LOW" control knob, for people who like low control knob.

In clip number four, I line electronics cavity with copper foil. No, I do not solder ground connection to this foil, I do not test with volt meter, and I do not attempt to create "faraday cage" to protect guitar from Electro-Magnetic Pulse attack from Uzbekistan. I just put in some copper foil tape, and move on to next task in my life.
