Hydrogen H2 - Magic Molecule or NetZero Delusion?
In the week of August 21, 2022, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz came to Canada, reportedly to make a deal for supplying hydrogen to Germany, and possibly talk about natural gas supply (Liquified Natural Gas - LNG), according to a Reuters news report. At this time, Germany is compromised as it relies heavily on Russia for natural gas supplied by pipelines, but due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and NATO country sanctions on Russia, Russia has constrained gas supply to Germany. Germany is one of the top five economies in the world and an industrial powerhouse, but without a stable supply of natural gas, many of those industries are at risk, and consumers will suffer extreme heat-or-eat poverty. In this presentation, Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society, discusses some perspectives on the problems of trying to use hydrogen as the 'clean' fuel of the future, relying on reports and commentaries by European energy experts. Michelle points out that 'futurists' like Jeremy Rifkin have been instrumental in setting Germany's catastrophic climate and energy policies, while the experienced and expert advice of Prof. Emeritus Samuel Furfari, a chemical engineer and former EU advisor, have been ignored. She notes that Gazprom funded climate activists are the ones who pushed Germany into this situation of reliance of Russian gas (according to media reports), and that they also claimed Germany should not waste money on building any LNG terminals. Without an LNG terminal, Germany cannot import such liquified natural gas from anywhere because you need an LNG terminal to convert the cooled liquified natural gas back into its gaseous state, so it can then be pumped through pipelines and used for heating, electrical generation, or as a supply for product development. Curiously, in Canada, a foreign-funded 'charity' called the International Institute for Sustainable Development, which got $7 million from the federal government and $17 million from foreign sources, made very similar claims about Canadian LNG opportunities. The IISD claimed since Canada only has one LNG port in the east and an incomplete one on the West Coast, that no further efforts should be made to expand facilities as this would lead to 'stranded assets'. Surely the global energy crisis shows there will not be any stranded assets and one has to ask why a foreign funded 'charity' is trying to subvert Canadian energy policies, block economic development and jobs, and mislead the public on the claims of the 'energy transition'? Freedom Convoy supporters were accused of being foreign-funded agents and many of the supporters' banking operations were shut down, despite there being no evidence, and despite typical contributions being from Canadians and on the order of $100. Why are both Germany and Canada being targeted by foreign funded climate activists to set detrimental energy policies? The power point will be posted on our blog which can be found at: http://www.friendsofscience.org
