We discuss chapters 15-27 of Agatha Christie's notorious serial murder story, 'The ABC Murders'. A fourth murder has taken place, but breaks the pattern of alliteration. Is the killer getting sloppy? It certainly seems so, as Alexander Bonaparte Cust totters around right under the Legion's nose. As their faith in Poirot wavers as much as their reliance on him grows, the threat of impending murders lingers. How does one catch a serial killer whose calling card is so distinct but indecipherable?
We also chat with Sophie Hannah about writing Poirot, and the importance of sidekicks and their voice of wisdom in a Christie novel. Which friend of the Belgian really loves him the most?
In this episode, Satoko attempts to help her friend make a sound ethical decision.

It's Review Season, and in 13th place, we’ve positioned several of Japan’s most renowned creative houses, with both film adaptations of ‘The Inugami Clan’. Author Seishi Yokomizo continues to haunt japanese mystery fiction, with spinoffs and adaptations of his leading detective, Kosuke Kindaichi, continuing production over forty years after his passing. Kon Ichikawa was perhaps more prolific, even if his comparisons to other contemporaneous Japanese directors are less universal.

We discuss Part 3, chapters 13-21, of 'Death and the Seaside' by Allison Moore, a creepy, ominous tale of women learning each others' secrets and demons. Bonnie's holiday to Seaton, or is it Seatown, with her landlady Sylvia, is off to a very strange start. Sylvia, a lady who preaches order and method, arrives late covered in some sort of glue. Strange, but I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation. How do the final strands of Bonnie, Sylvia, and Susan's stories collide. What constitutes failure, and what constitutes redemption?

We discuss chapter 8 and the epilogue of Masako Togawa's 'The Master Key'. This back-loaded mystery closes out with spectacular fashion, the culprit revealed, the various sub-plots untangled and almost all your questions answered. How well does this approach suit the work, and does it fit in to our normal cat-and-mouse game? With such a heavy focus on motherhood and the expectations placed on women, it's undoubtedly a worthwhile read to shake up the normal fare of the Japanese mystery field. We're also delighted to be joined by Caroline Crampton from the Shedunnit podcast to talk about her recent episode on Honkaku mysteries, how the show came to be, and a retrospective on our arch nemesis, The Floating Admiral.

We discuss the 1933 film adaptation of S.S. Van Dine's Kennel Murder Case. Said by some to be one of the best detective fiction adaptations for the silver screen of all time, we talk about all the charms that help this film hold ground over 85 years after it was released. We also speak with Dr. Mike Grost, a murder mystery enthusiast who maintains one of the best online databases of detective fiction on his personal website.
