Water shortages are becoming more and more common, especially in hot, dry climates like ours in Phoenix. But we believe that even in times of drought, we can still enjoy the beauty and benefits of gardening. That's why we built a wicking bed using a simple metal tub, and the results have been amazing. Our plants are thriving, and we've been able to conserve an amazing amount of water and reduce the time and effort required for garden maintenance. Instead of watering our plants every day, we only have to water them every three weeks!In this video, we'll take you on a journey through the construction and progress of our wicking bed over the past four months. You'll see how easy it was to build, how easy it is to maintain, and how much water and effort it has saved us. If you’re going to be home all day… you want to make sure the house smells amazing!
Think about it… if you have carpet all sorts of odors are lingering… even when you vacuum.
So here’s a simple recipe with just two ingredients to leave your carpets so fresh and so clean.
All you need is baking soda and your favorite essential oil and you have a toxic-free carpet freshener.
The great thing about baking soda is that instead of masking odors… it interacts with odor particles and neutralizes them.
As for the essential oil, choose what smells best to you.
I like peppermint oil because it smells fresh and naturally wards off certain pests… including ants.

The grey water system is complete!!!
We used a metal trough instead of the bed that we made from 100 year old wood… just because it seemed a little sturdier and would require less maintenance.
But those beds won’t go to waste… we’re using them for garden beds instead.
Back to the grey water system… our goal is to reuse our water, save money and help our environment.
So we dug a hole for the sump pump, cut the tubes to connect the system and petty much used resources from the land to fill the troughs – Two sizes of rocks, native soil, sand and plants, charcoal from a recent burn and compost.
The plan is to daisy chain several troughs to consistently clean the water and use the water for trees we’re planting around the land.
This grey water system is putting us closer to our ultimate goal of always striving to be more and more self sufficient – we’re reusing our water, using solar power to power the container, growing our own food, cooking with the sun and the list goes on.
