# The Great Race: Mount Panorama Bathurst 1975-1985

By 1975, after 13 years of the race being held at Bathurst, it had firmly established itself as an annual race legend, one never to be forgotten in the history of Australian motor sport. In that year it was Peter Brock back with Brian Sampson, who led a Holden swamping with the Torana SLR, then the Hollywood script-win of Bob Morris and John Fitzpatric in 1976 - the year the Toranas again swamped the field.
Allan Moffat teamed with international Jackie Ickx for the Falcon GT win of 1977 and Holden fought back with Brock and Richards tacking the first of their hat-trick wins (two in a Torana, the third in a Commodore). From 1981 to the end of the fabulous Group C era in '84, the Ford-Holden battle raged relentlessly on the Mountain, the Commodores winning three to Ford's one.
The following year saw the introduction of Group A, the world versus Australia. It was a whole new game that was being played on the Mountain - a game in which the rules were changing, and a game in which the stakes were bigger than ever...
