Preparation of Good Quality Scheele's Green From Arsenic Trioxide
In this video I demonstrate an old way of making Scheele's Green that yields a nice, consistent color. It's preparation is not the difficult nor is it all that dangerous so long as some common sense is used. Of course the compound itself toxic as hell as it contains cupric Cu(II) and hydrogen arsenite AsO3H-2 ions. It will dissolve in mineral acids back to free curpric ions and arsenous acid and not do much of anything else. You can clean your glassware this way (dispose of the waste water appropriately). However an active metal (anything that will dissolve in the acid to give off hydrogen gas) added to the mix may produce the heavier than air gas arsine which is a powerful blood poison (it attacks hemoglobin destroying its ability to carry oxygen). That particular combination should be avoided entirely.

In this video I prepare the very fluorescent cesium uranyl chloride. I also demonstrate a superior method for synthesizing alkali uranates from molten alkali chloride combined with a lesser amount of alkali nitrate.

In this video I create tantalum pentoxide from tantalum metal by dissolving the metal in molten KOH, boiling the resulting potassium tantalate in dilute acid, and finally calcining the hydrated tantalum pentoxide. This video also shows why tantalum crucibles should never be used with molten alkali.

In this video I use the arsenic trisulfide I made in the last video to make sodium thioarsenate; the arsenic analog of sodium thioantimonate. This is a more challenging synthesis. The fumes from this prep were among the worst I have ever dealt with. The final product cannot be rinsed or recrystallized without significant loss of the product.

In this video I attempt (and largely succeed) to produce the infamous Scheele's Green and Paris Green pigments responsible for so much death and suffering for over 100 years from the late 1700s to the late 1800s. I synthesize both from elemental arsenic that I dissolve in HNO3 and H2O2 to produce arsenic acid as well as from arsenic trioxide produced by thermal decomposition of a mixture of arsenic trioxide and arsenic pentoxide I made previously (don't miss the accident that happened on THAT one!). I also discuss some of the history of arsenic in the classical world including the well-known arsenic based "inheritance powders". There is also some bonus footage of copper acetate crystals under high magnification (stills this time, no super shaky video) after the end of the video.

In this video I go over the fundamentals of IR spectroscopy. We cover some of the vibrations covalent bonds can undergo, how an IR spectrum is obtained, and the basics of interpreting one. I wrap the video up by going over an example IR spec that I got off an explodey compound that we made in our Advanced Synthesis class: tris(o-phenanthroline) iron(II) perchlorate trihydrate.
