#colosseum #rome #gladiators #7wondersofworld

The Colosseum, as it is known today, is actually a nick name given to the amphitheatre after its construction. The original name of the Colosseum was the Flavian Amphitheatre named after the Flavian Dynasty of emperors who built it as a gift to the Roman people.

When you set your eyes on the Colosseum for the first time, it is natural to ask yourself, “How old is the Roman Colosseum”. This marvel of ancient Roman engineering is over 1,900 years old. The construction began in 72 AD and completed in 80 AD. This largest amphitheatre in the world at its tallest point stands 157 feet with 80 entrances which was designed to allow the spectators to access their designated seats quickly. The diagonal break, down the side of Colosseum is the result of the earthquake which rocked in 1349, and split its façade.

Watching gladiatorial games used to be a major sporting event in Rome. It is interesting to know that most of the gladiators were slaves who received special training in fights. Most of it ended up when one gladiator got too injured to continue or died. It is said that there were such brutal games in which about 10,000 animals were killed in a single day. When you enter the Colosseum, what attracts you is the underground section called the hypogeum. It is here where the gladiators and the wild animals stayed before the fights. It is also believed that there is a network of underground tunnels beneath its floor. A sophisticated system of elevators was used to lift animals and gladiators from the underground.

You may be surprised to know that the Colosseum had a retractable roof made of a series of canvas sails. The sails could be raised or lowered using a system of ropes and pulleys to provide shade for the spectators during bad weather. Today it would be difficult for its visitors to imagine Colosseum with roof.

This magnificent construction we see today is a pale shade. It is said that it was originally painted in bright colours with red, blue, green and gold. Over time the paint faded and eroded by the elements leaving it in its current state.

Not just a place of entertainment, this marvel was also a site of great religious significance. It is believed that the early Christian martyrs were executed here, making the place sacred.

Over the years the Colosseum has undergone many restorations and renovations to preserve its historical significance. In the early 2000’s, a major restoration project was launched to repair the damage caused by the pollution, weathering and natural disasters. It completed in the year 2016, thus opening to the public once again.

The Colosseum is not just a symbol of Roman power; it is also a marvel to the human capacity for innovation and creativity. A reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Rome, the Colosseum continues to inspire awe and wonder in visitors from all over the world. This complex monument built of limestone, volcanic rock and brick concrete definitely holds many secrets and mysteries.
