Developed and published by Domark in 1991. Undoubtedly one of THE defining moments in computer game history, Jordan Mechner originally released Prince of Persia on the Apple II home computer back in 1989. The undeniably exquisite (for the time) hand drawn, rotoscoped animations of the player character had to be seen to be believed. Fast forward a couple of years and the Amiga received an excellent conversion. I had never heard of the game as a child and I can still remember that particular Christmas morning having received my brand new Amiga 500 and a box of games to try; having just come from the Commodore 64, this blew my mind! In fact, the game had the ability to wow any onlookers, including my parents. Even today, they remember Prince of Persia as well as I do. Having heaped praise and superlatives on the game, let's consider just why the game is worthy of such praise, animation aside. Firstly, the multi-levelled platform climbing concept is utterly brilliant. The tension as you must time your leaps across death-defying drops before scrambling to giddy heights among the mouldering dungeons of the evil Jaffar was unparalleled. Death was always seconds away, usually in the form of a mistimed jump, or coming to a grisly end between the teeth of those infamous metal jaws; the thunderous clanging as the jaws met was truly terrifying! Peril also came in the form of armed palace guards. Each an expert swordsman, the combat requires the player to block an opponent's strikes whilst looking to land strikes of your own. In a twist of fate, it is perfectly possible to force opponents into the very same traps that are there to kill the player; there is nothing sweeter than forcing a guard between the jaws of the guillotine, or into a spike trap. Hidden throughout the levels are various potions that can be drunk to regain health. There are also special vials that can increase your maximum health, but there are also vials of poison that will damage your health, so you must pay close attention to the colour of the bubbles that emanate from the top of the bottle. To make things harder, the game has a strict one-hour time limit in which to complete the game. This does not afford the player many mistakes, as death will result in the level restarting. I make sure to make guards suffer where possible, purely for your delectation (killing them with the sword is just boring!) The artwork and layout of the screen mimics the style of panels used to depict the story, and the box-out imagery and captions lend the game a sense of authenticity. The contextual interaction system is also quite unique. Pressing down and fire cycles through a list of possible interactions with items and scenery, although certain options won't appear unless Dan is carrying the requisite item. I loved the fact the developers had a sense of humour - not all of the interactions yield fruitful results, but experimenting with them is a lot of fun. Ground-breaking CGI effects aside, it was a gripping, well-directed film that remains the high watermark for the Terminator franchise. As was to be expected, every big-budget film was to be surrounded by a slew of merchandise, including the obligatory video games of dubious quality. Certainly more dubious than most is the Amiga license of the game, another game that bears the hallmarks of a title hastily developed to cash in on the film's success. The first stage is a basic fighting section that pits the T-800 against the T-1000 in the mall scene from the film. Starting at either side of the screen, both Terminators are armed with a handgun and limited number of bullets with which to shoot each other. Getting hit by a bullet inflicts a small amount of damage and temporarily stuns the victim for a few seconds. Once ammunition has been expended, the player must resort to fisticuffs to take the opponent down. There is next to no strategy, other than hitting the fire button as fast as possible, without getting hit in return. The second level is an overhead driving section that sees the T-800 and John Connor attempting to outrun the T-1000 in the storm-drain. Crashing into obstacles will drain the T-800's health, whilst getting rammed by the T-1000's truck will train Connor's. Should either health bar drop to zero then the game is over. Should the player somehow manage to survive, they are faced with a bonus section involving moving tiles around to match the image in the bottom left of the screen. The image in question is a schematic of the Terminator's arm, where the aim is to wire up the servos correctly in order to restore functionality - fans of the films will probably be aware that this scene is actually from the first Terminator film, not the sequel and really has no place in the game. Successfully rewire the arm and you'll be rewarded the with some extra health. Level three is another fighting section set in the Pescadero mental hospital. The only difference here is the T-1000 has more health and the backdrop of a wall and vending machine has been replaced with a lift and a no-smoking sign. Level four is yet another puzzle section involving one of those infuriating sliding tile puzzles. The objective is rearrange the squares to complete the digitised image of the T-800's head whilst under a strict time limit. Solve it and you're rewarded with some extra health.
