Country boy (Lloyd) heads to the big city to seek success. While working as a clerk in a department store, he talks the manager into offering $1000 to anyone who can bring more customers to the store. He then arranges for a friend, a "human fly," (Strothers) to climb the face of the store building as a publicity stunt. Unfortunatly the "human fly" is a wanted man, and when "The Law" (Young) shows, our hero must make the climb, himself. At each ledge he encounters new difficulties, climaxing in the famous 'clock scene.' Safety Last! is a 1923 American silent romantic comedy film starring Harold Lloyd. It includes one of the most famous images from the silent film era: Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic. The film was highly successful and critically hailed, and it cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in early motion pictures. It is still popular at revivals, and it is viewed today as one of the great film comedies. The film's title is a play on the common expression, "safety first," which prioritizes safety as a means to avoid accidents, especially in workplaces. Lloyd performed some of the climbing stunts himself, despite having lost a thumb and forefinger four years earlier in a film accident. A group of three criminals is planning to rob the Southwest Bank in St. Louis. Gino, one of the criminals, has brought along George Fowler, who is to be the driver for the other three. The other two criminals are uncomfortable with him, and the boss insists on testing George first. Gino also makes George ask Ann, Gino's sister and George's former girlfriend, for money. The gang starts to case the bank carefully, and to test possible plans. But Ann suspects something, and she begins to confront George, which starts to cause complications and to create tensions among the gang.
