Today Brian Lovig Talks John Tory , Water Rights, DC Concealed Carry
Toronto mayoral candidate Doug Ford took aim at John Tory's resumé this morning, alleging that his opponent intentionally neglected to tell voters about his tenure on the board and audit committee of a U.S. telecommunications company that filed for creditor protection in 2009.
Ford accused Tory of failing to mention his eight years at Charter Communications on the biography posted on John Tory's campaign website.
"It was one of the biggest bankruptcies in U.S. history and he's not telling people about this," said Ford. "Voters don't know about his business record. He doesn't want to bring it to the forefront."
Ford's allegations about omissions in Tory's resume are the focus on a new video ad from the Ford campaign.
Minutes after Ford's news conference, Tory held one of his own to announce an endorsement from Coun. Gary Crawford.
When asked about his time at Charter, Tory said "I would stack my resume against Doug Ford any day of the week."

aying there is no such thing as a legal right to clean running water, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes dismissed a request from Detroit residents to impose a six-month moratorium on water shutoffs by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) on Monday.
The plaintiffs had argued last week that the DWSD shutoffs over delinquent water bills violated the human rights of impoverished citizens who had no ability to pay what the city says they owe, and who were left without access to clean water by the shutoff policy.
“There is no such right or law,” Rhodes said, according to the Detroit News. He also rejected the idea that citizens have a right to “service based on an ability to pay.”
Those remarks are notable because Rhodes didn’t even have to speak to the substance of the plaintiffs’ arguments. Bankruptcy law doesn’t give him the power to force the city to take the sort of action the plaintiffs requested, so Rhodes could have dismissed the request on simple procedural grounds.

Wynne, not Ford, is the scary one
The real train wreck and dumpster fire in Ontario politics is not the election of Doug Ford as leader of the Progressive Conservatives.
It’s the financial record of Ontario’s Liberal government over the past 15 years, first under Dalton McGuinty and now Kathleen Wynne.
Under their leadership, Ontario has become the most indebted sub-sovereign (non-national) borrower in the world, with a current debt of $312 billion, 125% higher than the $139 billion the Liberals inherited from the PCs in 2003.
The Liberals have already broken Wynne’s election promise to run a balanced budget next year, now saying they will add up to $8 billion to the debt, consistent with their dismal performance of achieving only three balanced budgets from 2003 to 2017 while doubling provincial spending.

Racial Profiling?
Ontario's highest court will hear an appeal today from a man who argues his gun offence conviction is a result of racial profiling.
Richard Steele's lawyers say in a factum filed with the court that Steele's trial judge erred in failing to properly consider evidence of racial profiling in finding him guilty.
An Ontario Superior Court justice convicted Steele in 2010 of concealing a loaded handgun under the front passenger seat of his mother's car after being pulled over in Hamilton. There were four black men in the car and Steele alleges he's a victim of driving while black.
Court documents show his lawyer says the gun the officer found should have been excluded as evidence, because Const. Yvonne Stephens conducted an improper search of the vehicle.
The lawyer also maintains police only pulled the vehicle over because of the driver's race and then violated Steele's right to privacy.
The Crown denies racial profiling had anything to do with the incident, and says the officer's behaviour was not unusual or racist.

Why America’s Free Market Economy Works Better in Some Places than Others
If it’s working right, the free market system produces goods and services better than any alternative. It creates powerful incentives to innovate, and generally ensures people’s earnings reflect the value they deliver to others through work. It also offers upward mobility to people who invest in their own “human capital” and work hard. (That said, the market economy doesn’t promise equal outcomes, since people’s contributions are invariably unequal.)

A ruling that could carry implications for comedy clubs across Canada, the Supreme Court of British Columbia has upheld the right of a bar patron to receive five-figures in damages from a comedian whose performance she alleges gave her post-traumatic stress disorder.
In 2011, Toronto comedian Guy Earle was ordered by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal to pay $15,000 to Lorna Pardy, a homosexual woman who said she suffered "lasting physical and psychological effect" after Mr. Earle directed a string of lesbian slurs at her during a 2007 Vancouver open mic night.
On Wednesday, the B.C. court ruled against Mr. Earle's assertion that comedy clubs should remain special places devoted to the "fearless pursuit of free speech" and that the Tribunal's decision would have a "chilling effect on performances and artists in British Columbia."

Rather, ruled Justice Jon Sigurdson, while comedy clubs may swirl with "offensive, irreverent and inappropriate" language they are not operating in "zones of absolute immunity from human rights legislation."
In May of 2007, Lorna Pardy and a girlfriend were at Zesty's, a Vancouver restaurant with largely gay clientele, when an open mic night hosted by Mr. Earle kicked off. The two women decided to stay and watch the show.
According to the later findings of the Human Rights Tribunal, during the show Ms. Pardy's girlfriend had merely pecked her on the cheek when Mr. Earle told the crowd "Don't mind that inconsiderate dyke table over there. You know lesbians are always ruining it for everybody."

Part of the reason for this is the frankly disastrous state of Charest's government. In the past two years, the government has lurched from one scandal to the next, from political financing to favouritism in the provincial daycare system to the matter of Charest's own (long undisclosed) $75,000 stipend, paid to him by his own party, to corruption in the construction industry. Charest has stymied repeated opposition calls for an investigation into the latter, prompting many to wonder whether the Liberals, who have long-standing ties to Quebec's construction companies, have something to hide. (Regardless, this much is true: it costs Quebec taxpayers roughly 30 per cent more to build a stretch of road than anywhere else in the country, according to Transport Canada figures.) Quebecers want to believe Bellemare, it seems, because what he says is closest to what they themselves believe about their government.

I'm often asked versions of the following: Given that the political right is so corrupted by conservatives who seek to limit liberty in countless ways, wouldn't it be better to abandon the language of "left" vs. "right" and adopt new terminology?
My answer is that, because the terms "left" and "right" are already widely used to denote the basic political alternative, and because that alternative is in fact binary, the best approach for advocates of freedom is not to reject the prevalent terminology but to clarify it—by defining the relevant terms.
The problem with conventional approaches to the left-right political spectrum is that they either fail to define the alternatives in question, or proceed to define them in terms of non-essentials.
One common approach, for instance, fails to specify the precise nature of either side, yet proceeds to place communism, socialism, and modern "liberalism" on (or toward) the left—and fascism, conservatism, and capitalism on (or toward) the right.
This makes no sense, at least in terms of the right. Capitalism—the social system of individual rights, property rights, and personal liberty—has nothing in common with conservatism or fascism. Take them in turn.

Cost Of Bilingualism
Ottawa spends $1.5 billion a year on official bilingualism, and that's a conservative estimate.
It includes the cost of printing laws and government forms in both French and English, and offering bilingual service at federal offices and courts. It covers the budget of the federal language nannies at the official languages office. And it includes training civil servants to speak both languages and paying them bonuses for doing so, plus ad campaigns extolling the glories of bilingualism.
But it doesn't include the $900 million spent by the provinces or the hundreds of millions more spent by private companies to comply with federal and provincial language regulations.
Given that the Official Languages Act is now more than 40 years old, it is not much of a stretch to conclude that Canadians have spent more than $80 billion (in 2012 dollars) — maybe a lot more — on promoting and enforcing our phony linguistic duality.
It's time this expensive experiment in social engineering was ended.
As 2011 census figures on language revealed this week, all the money and effort expended has achieved almost nothing. Whereas about 14% of Canadians claimed to be bilingual on the 1971 census, last year just 17% did. And the rise over 40 years has been almost all from francophones who learned English because they wanted to or because they felt they had to to succeed.

The most troubling part of Justin Trudeau’s attempt to rewrite history on the SNC-Lavalin affair is it’s a sign the prime minister may be prepared to politically interfere again in a criminal prosecution.

Grocery rebate rollout:
Here’s who will get the one-time payment and when Canadians will receive the one-time grocery rebate as early as July 5, the federal government said Thursday.
In a statement, the government said the grocery rebate will be delivered to eligible Canadians on that date, by direct deposit or cheque through the Canada Revenue Agency.
The rebate will be up to $467 for eligible couples with two children, $234 for single Canadians without children, and $225 for seniors, on average.

In 2020, the Trudeau government increased Canada’s official foreign development assistance by 7.7 per cent over the previous year. The recent 2021 federal budget announced an additional $1.4 billion for international assistance over the next five years.
Canada’s Foreign Aid commitments include $288 million to the Rohingya Crisis, as well as $80 million to the Venezuelan Crisis.
