Cheer up, John! (German: Kopf hoch, Johannes!) is a 1941 German film directed by Viktor de Kowa starring Toni Huppertz, Wilhelm Krug and Felix von Eckardt. The film focuses on play, physical training and character building in the presentation of the NPEA, rather than the essence of the institution as an elite school (outstanding academic achievements were a prerequisite for admission). Filming took place from 10 June 1940 in the Tobis studio in Berlin-Johannisthal. This was followed by exterior shots of the former manor (now Kartzow Castle) in Kartzow, west of Berlin, in the Oranienstein Educational Institute (now Oranienstein Castle) in Diez an der Lahn, which opened in 1934, in Arnstein Abbey and Runkel Castle. On November 16, 1940, the work on the film was completed. The production costs of the film amounted to 747,000 Reichsmarks; by the end of 1941, "the film had grossed 1,344,000 Reichsmarks." The production of the film was closely monitored by the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (RMVP) and especially by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, to which director de Kowa responded: "The task of creating a reflection of the life of this young generation, of this future leadership of Greater Germany – this is a work for which one can be honestly and unreservedly enthusiastic." Even an early cut version, however, could not completely inspire Goebbels (diary entry of 12 August 1940: "Too loud and not quite skillful in directing, but good in the theme"). In the diary entry of November 25, 1940, the criticism becomes clearer: "A Napola film "Cheer up, Johannes!" Quite badly and completely misguided under the direction of de Kowa. It will be almost impossible to salvage." Rescue attempts were nevertheless made; Scenes had to be removed, others had to be reshot. On February 5, 1941, the film was submitted to the Filmprüfstelle Berlin under the test number 54995. The film premiered on 11 March 1941 at the Tauentzienpalast in Berlin. It is the third and last directorial work of the actor de Kowa. The pre-program was the short film Jugend fliegt, produced by Ufa together with the National Socialist Air Corps. Condottieri is a 1937 Italian historical drama film directed by Luis Trenker and starring Trenker, Loris Gizzi and Laura Nucci. It portrays the life of Giovanni de' Medici, a celebrated condottiere of the sixteenth century, and draws parallels with Benito Mussolini, in their unifying of Italy. A separate German-language version was also made. The film received 9.6 million lire of funding from the Italian government, as part of a major drive by the Fascist authorities to develop the Italian film industry (which also involved the construction of the large Cinecittà complex in Rome). The film's elaborate sets were designed by Virgilio Marchi and Erich Grave, while Herbert Ploberger produced the costumes.
