Who would have thought that putting an end to ivory poaching would have this effect? ?
In this video, principal scientist and associate professor of the Wild Nature Institute at Penn State University Derek E. Lee talks about the surprising domino effect putting a stop to poaching has caused.
According to Derek, putting a stop to poaching activities has interrupted criminal gang activities such as terrorism, civil unrest, and even civil war. ?

In this episode, we sit down with Giovanni Strona, a senior researcher at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre and a former Associate Professor in Ecological Data Sciences at The University of Helsinki. With research interests centering around the interface between ecology, computer science, and physics, Giovanni is on a mission to better understand the multi-faceted threats of global change.
So what role do ecological interactions play in extinction processes – and what mechanisms are contributing to biodiversity loss? Giovanni joins us to discuss his perspective on a chilling topic: the potential of another mass extinction…
Tune in now to find out:
1. The pathogens that may threaten our biological systems.
2. What permafrost can show us about ancient viruses and bacteria.
3. Methods scientists are using to study organisms that are thousands of years old.

Karl Hassan researches antimicrobial resistance specific to hospital-associated pathogens. He talks about his work towards developing compounds that can overcome this resistance.
He explains
1. The two main types of resistance, acquired and intrinsic;
2. Which pathogens are the toughest to combat, namely gram-negative bacteria; and
3. How understanding a specific gene expression for a bacteria may provide answers toward generating compounds to kill that bacteria.
Karl Hassan is an ARC Future Fellow at the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Newcastle in Australia. He studies antimicrobial resistance of pathogens common to hospital settings. He explains that these pathogens adapted to the hospital niche and have become superbugs. Because big pharmaceutical companies experience low profits from antibiotic development, the research has been taken up by university scholars like Hassan.
He talks more about the inner workings of the bacteria, especially the gram-negative bacteria, which present more of a challenge because they have two membranes and are intrinsically resistant. He explains more about the mechanics and cell architecture and then shares an exciting find: they were able to identify a gene that was unknown and verified that when expressed, it offered resistance to the bacteria.
They believe, based on tests, it may code for the efflux pump protein. Understanding how different families of efflux pumps work will help develop compounds that can infiltrate the bacteria cells. He finishes by explaining the process for how something like this find can lead to eventual compound production.

If diabetes were a country, it would be the third largest country in the world.
That’s right—there are about 463 million people globally who have diabetes, and only a very small percentage of those people are actually successfully treated and not impacted by comorbidities.
When examining this problem, are we considering all contributing factors?
Tune in to learn:
1. What ‘social vulnerability’ means in the context of health and other inequalities
2. How diabetes is negatively impacting healthcare systems on a global scale
3. How technologies like AI can aid in the understanding of complex biological, social, geographical, and cultural factors impacting health and equality around the world
David Napier is a professor of medical anthropology at University College London, where he also serves as the director of the Center for Applied Global Citizenship, and the Science, Medicine, and Society Network. For the past eight years, he has been an academic lead for a program called Cities Changing Diabetes, which aims to research and limit type 2 diabetes in cities around the world.
“By constructing this [diabetes] as a purely biomedical problem, we’re failing to address what the key drivers of this are, and we’re failing, therefore, to develop responses to that disease that will help us to reduce where it’s going in the next 45 years,” says Napier. Despite clear evidence of the significance of sociocultural drivers, there is a surprising lack of scientific publication on them.
Napier discusses the ins and outs of this global problem, the details of his efforts to address it, and what’s to come in the near future.

In the world of diabetes, Khambatta and Barbaro are teaching something that no one else is, and it’s working. In this episode, you will learn:
1. What it means to be insulin resistant, and how insulin resistance develops in the body
2. How refined sugar differs from natural sugar in terms of the mechanisms by which they are metabolized and promote insulin secretion in the body
3. Nutrition facts and the best diet for type 1 diabetes (and why it’s not what you’ve been told)
4. How even a small amount of oil can immediately and negatively impact a person who has diabetes
“Am I a freak of nature?” That was the one question Khambatta had for his professors while in graduate school for nutritional biochemistry. He’d been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 22, put on insulin, and told to adhere to a low-carb diet. Over time, his blood glucose levels rose, he needed an increasing amount of insulin, and the symptoms of type 1 diabetes hadn’t subsided; he knew something wasn’t right with the prescribed treatment.
After conducting his own research on his condition and trying to determine why the recommended treatment didn’t seem to be working, he came upon a nutrition professional who advised him to transition to a low-fat, plant-based, whole-foods diet. The result? After one week, Khambatta cut his insulin use by 40% while at the same time consuming six times the amount of carbs that the doctor recommended.
Determined to figure out how this was possible—and whether other people with diabetes could benefit in the same way—Khambatta dove deeper into the research on diabetes and discovered a whole collection of papers that described precisely what he was experiencing.
Since then, he and Barbaro (who had a very similar experience with type 1 diabetes) have taught thousands of people how to follow in their footsteps by transitioning to a low-fat, whole-foods, plant-based diet. Together, Khambatta and Barbaro have founded Mastering Diabetes, a program that aims to translate the true science of insulin resistance for the people who need it most.
“This carbohydrate-insulin model that the diabetes world operates off of—that the more carbohydrates you eat the more insulin you need, and/or the more carbohydrates you eat the fatter you get and the harder your pancreas has to work—that whole story is convoluted and is correct only in very specific situations,” explains Khambatta.
