Community & Correspondence ~ Beat Sushi for Dan in Mass
Taking a break from chainsaw noise cutting down bamboo, DaveO rambles on about the importance of community and correspondence (yes spelled incorrectly) – especially while in a rough patch with a chronic and complex illness #MECFS – and shares a remarkable package sent by Kerouac enthusiast Dan Bacon in Massachusetts including: scrapboook, artifacts, ephemera and memorabilia from Lowell, Jack Kerouac’s 100th birthday, and other events including the impending Town and the City music festival which inspires playing of lovely blue Tanya Donelly and Parkington Sisters vinyl record.
Also shows new-ish Cascadia passport and meanders about Gary Snyder in Japan years ago and his recent convos with poet Wang Pang ++ love of maps, letters, stories, and how we’re all part of the erstwhile Beat tradition if we are living intentionally, respecting others’ voices and creating goodness.
Ambient video version of a Postcards from Gravelly Beach podcast – the audio in the *actual pod* is much better but just happened to film whilst recording and added a few snaps from the journey for amusement and colour, so here we are, in my kura barn studio in provincial Japan, ergo:
"Washing dishes and busted spectacles lead to rowing a lake in Nepal figuring out deity, enlightenment, peace and power with choruses fresh from diaries – plus Royal hospitals, poetic devices and question mark eyebrows. Your turn Buddha, your turn."

Drinking Turmeric concoction in a stolen mug with a velour tracksuit, Dave rambles about misplaced “tribute to Mom” memorandum log and love of receiving cards and letters which are stashed lovingly in handmade scrapbooks and shared with family.
Plus quick hits about festive cards (and evidential delays), poems, time traveller photos, letterhead, stationery and Ryoko’s Kinome office.
Name checks for new Papas, Steve Rapport (Mostly Rock n Roll), David Bowie 83, and Hotel Monterey and lost/odd Christmases.

I read my poem "Alchemists Confer with Hypnotists" at a unique & enchanting event: The “Muriel‘s Journey“ poetry prize reading as part of “WORD Vancouver” as awarded the "random prize" (hooray!). Because of a typhoon rolling into our area, I recorded a rehearsal video in my beloved barn studio "just in case" and for my own enjoyment and possibly yours.
About the Poem: i'll go into it more than another time if curious, but in brief: the poem is about coming to grips with the onset chronic and complex disease and the conundrum of being in lovely/spectacular places – from Jamaica to Suez – but being plagued by pain, anxiety, ghosts and confusion and misunderstanding of friends who didn't understand... and just wanting someone to help me sleep after being so frustrated after seeing seemingly every kind of doctor possible (and having to make a big long list of everything for various paperwork) so I laughed to myself "the only type of doctor I hadn't seen was alchemists and hypnotists."
Thanks to Muriel's Journey 2021 And Beyond and friend Isabella Mori for including me in this community and Muriel Marjorie "the patron saint" of the initiative. "This unique poetry prize celebrates the legacy of Downtown Eastside poet-activist Muriel Marjorie by requiring community activism by entrants as its only submission fee".
Buy the book (for $8 CAD) from Amzn or ask your local bookshop to order from Ingram: https://www.amazon.ca/Fire-Heart-Winners-Muriels-Journey/dp/1988915422/

Wearing a smoking jacket at Tsuchida Cottage, Dave riffs on recent activities including: planting vegetable garden, playing piano, buying baby clothes, and sort-ganizing archives including digging out loads of books. As such, shows books by mixed-media makers Douglas Coupland, Nick Bantock, and Ethan Hubbard, plus poets Gary Snyder "Rivers and Mountains Without End", and reads from Jack Kerouac's Japan-bound "American Haikus", plus riffs about Tintin, fire lookouts and mailing postcards.

How are you doing?
PS
As you’ve gathered from our dispatch, we’re doing alright (although a lot of anxiety about the little human coming but…) I also have a lot of friends/comrades dealing with chronic and complex diseases and have been housebound for years and feeling a little bit blue about seeing so many suddenly dealing with a situation they’ve had to deal with for years and years so, please take a moment to reach out to any of your friends / relatives who need an extra hand at this time, or at least let them know you “get them” a little bit more now.
Postscript: While keeping in touch with friends around the world, my wee heart aches for kind, hard-working people in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Uganda and so on who are having a rough go of it. If you are so inclined, and have ability, I can definitely assist in building connections to support people by: purchasing art, sending donations, or just sending good vibes and feelings. We *all* need help sometimes.
