Last year some people had accused us of removing the bear’s teeth and that was why we could be near them...they said they didn’t ever see the teeth...just gums and lips. I believe that we successfully convinced everyone that we dearly love these bears and we would never do such a horrible thing... so take a look at this really neat video of Leo. You get a really good look at why it may appear they have no teeth in some videos....its just that their teeth are set farther back than you think. What a great video Susan got of how their mouth looks close up!

When I watch videos of Leo, I say to myself, “now that is the cutest bear ever”, when I watch videos of Jimbo, I say to myself “oh my goodness that is the cutest bear ever!” and now I’m watching videos of Jenny and of course saying to myself “no no this is the cutest bear ever!”

This morning Randy texted Susan and it said "I am sooooo sick and tired of all this LEO, LEO LEO and SONYA, SONYA, SONYA stuff. Have you LOOKED at ME? I'm freaking ADORABLE! And HANDSOME. I'm dang near MAGNFICIENT. Come out here with your silly phone and I'll give you something to post. And the crowds will start SCREAMING and CHANTING - RANDY, RANDY, RANDY - as they SHOULD be." And so she did, and so this video was made. You may commence chanting.

Special thanks this week to Dr. Joe and his team from Catskill Veterinary Services. They went above and beyond to try to help save a groundhog who had been hit by a car. Dr. Joe suspected she was pregnant and even did a sonogram to confirm. We didn’t think she would survive but hoped to try to get her to a point where her babies could be delivered. Susan syringe fed her for many days and kept her warm and dry, and pain free…but in the end we weren’t able to save her or her little ones. But we still appreciate all that Dr. Joe did to try to help her.

Many people ask us if the bears ever fight. Susan says that bears try to avoid conflict whenever possible. They don't want a troublesome life and will go out of their way to not fight with each other. There are the occasional swats or growls, but all in all the bears live a very peaceful life together.

Every year we get tons of questions about the bears and hibernation. Bears in captivity rarely fully hibernate. They do slow down a great deal, each much less, sleep a lot more - but they almost all still get up every day and go out for a stroll. Frankie is our most "hibernating bear", and sleeps the most and eats the least, but in general, everyone slows down a lot over the winter, but none fully go into a hibernation state. Additionally this time of year you will see much fatter bears as their bodies do bulk up for winter. Some can go from eating 30 lbs of food a day, to about 5 lbs, so this extra weight and bulk NOW get them through the winter.
