On September 16th, Federal prosecutors announced that the Michigan-based physician, Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, was a part of an underground network of physicians in a close-knit community of Indian Muslims that had been performing female genital mutilation (FGM) on minors. Dr. Nagarwala, an emergency room doctor in Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, was arrested in 2017. She was charged with performing FGM on two children, aged six to nine, in Livonia, MI. After two months, Dr. Fakhruddin Attar, the clinic owner, and his wife, Farida Attar, were charged for conspiring in the performance of FGM. Prosecutors added that Dr. Nagarwala traveled to Washington DC to perform FGM on as many as five children. Federal prosecutors also disclosed two female physicians were carrying out FGM aside from Dr. Nagarwala; the physicians are based in California and Illinois. ? This move completely backtracked on the deal the conservative Muslim country made to secure the soccer tournament. Islam forbids Muslims to drink alcohol as it is considered to be haram or "forbidden." Islamic scholars and religious authorities usually cite the sayings of Prophet Muhammad and the adverse effects alcohol can have on one's body. Authorities declared that alcoholic products would be served only in the luxury hospitality areas of the arenas. The decision spread tension over how the event will play out. Budweiser, the tournament's official beer sponsor, received a significant blow as the sale of alcohol is heavily restricted in the autocratic country and raised the question of how much control FIFA has over the tournament. According to a Gallup survey, 47% of the US population are members of some religious institutions. Two decades ago, the percentage was 70%. Experts say that many millennials turn away from religion due to the mixing of right-wing politics and Christianity. Professor of the University of Notre Dame's political science department, David Campbell, stated that this decline is an "allergic reaction to the religious right." His research shows that an increasing number of Americans have moved away from religion as politicians – mainly Republicans – have combined faith with their politics. Campbell says the current decline is likely to continue. Democrats are opting out of organized religion as religion has been closely linked with conservative politics. Co-founder of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Annie Laurie Gaylor, said that the Gallup data suggests the US is moving positively. She mentioned that even though the American constitution forbids any religious test for public office, politicians virtually have to wear religion on their sleeve to be elected. ?
