Still image: Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, The Republic of Artsakh Video footage: Yerevan, Armenia Words based on the civil war in Shan State, Myanmar This project combines the terms of two geographically distant conflict zones to explore the effects of war on communities, landscapes, and populations. While Shan State, Myanmar and The Republic of Artsakh are remote from each other geographically, the suffering, death, and displacement of civilian populations for the sake of geopolitical agendas, and the complicity of generals, politicians, arms dealers, and vested third-country interests are the same. An iconic symbol of Armenian culture, Ghazanchetsots Cathedral was damaged by two Azerbaijan shelling attacks on October 8, 2020, in the on-going conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Artsakh. In today’s conflict in Artsakh, the international community remains complicit and essentially silent as Azerbaijan with explicit support from Turkey fuels the conflict. Meanwhile, arms manufacturers from around the world supply weapons of destruction which are being used against civilians. The same complicity exists in Myanmar, where Western countries and corporations are eager to overlook government military attacks against civilians, mass rape campaigns, and even genocide, in order to open markets and access resources. Databending, a form of glitch art that disrupts the fundamental structure of a file, is used in this video's signal processing. Here glitching is applied to both the video and spoken words as a means of expressing the degradation and destruction of human values and lives for the sake of economic and nationalistic goals, leaving civilian populations and natural ecosystems to be pawns to be played, manipulated, or utilized, in global currents of economics and resources. Despite the benefits to governments, corporations, weapons manufacturers, or superpowers, these conflicts must end. Western powers must use their economic and military influence to end the conflict in Artsakh, and must cease profiting from human rights abuses in Myanmar—as they must in the rest of the world as well.
