Baroque is Spain is often called Siglo de Oro (Golden Century), mostly because literature and painting.
Painting
El Greco: I talked about him in Renaissance Art but I included him here briefly since he’s between the two periods. The painting is Caballero de la mano en el pecho.
Luis Tristán: disciple of El Greco. Influenced by manierismo. Realism. Retablo of Yepes church, Santa Mónica, Portrait of painter, Old man.
Juan Sánchez Cotán: he made still life paintings with geometric composition, or parables.
Juan Bautista Maino: he went to Milan. Recuperación de la Bahía de Todos los Santos, Adoration of the Kings, Adoration of the Shepherds.
Pedro de Orrente: with reddish tones in the colors. Multiplication of breads and fishes.
Bartolomé Carducho: he went to El Escorial, in the court of Felipe III. Descent.
Vicente Carducho: brother of Bartolomé, also painter of the king. Allegory of Santo Ángel Custodio.
Francisco Ribalta: he went to Italy and was influenced by tenebrism. Vision of St Franciscus, Supper, St Bernardo hugging Christ in the cross.
Francisco Pacheco: not mentioned in the video, but he was the master of Velázquez, and it is important to know that he writes theory of how to represents the religious images in painting, like the Christ, with 4 nails instead 3, with horizontal arms.
José de Ribera: he lived in Naples. Influenced by Caravaggio. Francisco de Zurbarán: he lives in the reign of Felipe IV. He paints the clothes very realistically, and also the expressions of the faces. Influenced by tenebrism. Conception, Crucifixion, Young San Serapio, St Francisco and the skull, Aparition of St Pedro to St Pedro Nolasco, Pedro Nolasco in the celestial Jerusalem, Annunciation, Apotheosis of St Jerome, Apotheosis of St Tomás de Aquino, Salón de Reinos del Palacio del Buen Retiro, Hercules and Cerberus, Defence of the Cádiz bay, Adoration of the shepherds, Adoration of the kings, Circumcision, St Hugo and the carthusians, Still life, Agnus dei.
Diego Velázquez: influenced by Caravaggio, Rubens, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Ribera, Zurbarán and Valdés, he’s the greatest painter in Spain in this moment. Great realism, he made genre scenes, portraits of kings, religious paintings and allegories. Old woman frying eggs, Adoration of the kings, Waterseller of Sevilla, Crucifixion, Christ in the house of Marta, Triumph of Bacchus, Forge of Vulcanus, Mother Jerónima de la Fuente, Luis de Góngora, Felipe IV in horse, Baltasar Carlos in horse, Felipe IV (2), Infante Don Carlos, Conde Duque de Olivares (2, one in horse), Surrender of Breda, Buffoons and dwarves, Inocent X, Venus of the Mirror, Hilanderas, Meninas.
Bartolomé Esteban Murillo: he paints more genre scenes. Immaculate, Children eating mellon, Sellers of fruits, Divine Shepherd, Children of the shell, Children playing the dices, Child in the window, Holy family of the bird, Adoration of the shepherds, St Isabel de Hungary, Moses and the water of the rock, Multiplication of breads and fishes, St Francisco hugging Christ in the cross.
Alonso Cano: he was also architect and sculptor. Santa Inés, King of Spain, St Isidro and the miracle of the well, Immaculate, Visitation, Annunciation, Virgin with child, Virgin of rosary, San Benito and the vision of the globe and three angels, Dead Christ and the angel.
Juan de Valdés Leal: the most baroque of them all. Virgen de los Plateros, Retirada de los Sarracenos. St Jerome whipped by the angels, Temptations of St Jerome, Finis gloriae mundi, In ictu oculi.
