Douglas Lain and Derick Varn discuss the US presidential election, the degraded state of US politics, and what both mean for a left that may be as degraded as the rest of society. In this episode of Pop the Left we'll go beyond the question of whether US socialists should support Biden in this election and try to understand what this moment means and where we're headed. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjN7GSe9RE0

Zero Books Manifesto:
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.

This video is a brief synopsis of Capital Volume One, Chapter One, Section Four. It is not meant to be a substitute for actually reading Marx’s big book, but rather it is meant to entice you to read along with our Herding Cats reading group. Discussions between members of the reading group will be appearing monthly on this channel for as long as it takes us to get through Capital, Volume 1.

Ben Burgis returns to discuss logic, Ad Hominem fallacies, inconsistent arguments and why libertarians are being inconsistent when they support so-called “right to work” legislation in the United States. Also featured in this video is a clip from a recent Chapo Trap House live event at Princeton wherein the Chapo gang suggested that “logical fallacies are just something nerds invented so they can say ‘time out’ in the middle of an ass-kicking.”

Political Scientist Adolph Reed, Jr. has been writing about Black politics and Black political thought for over four decades. Having been an activist in the 60s as well as a long time labor organizer, his scholarship has persistently challenged orthodox thinking regarding Black political activity. Some of his classic works such as "Class Notes: Posing as Politics and Other Thoughts on the American Scene," and "Stirrings in the Jug: Black Politics in the Post Segregation Era," have set the standard for discussing the contemporary realities of Black political life. Today we will inquire of Adolph Reed, Jr., "Does Black Politics Work for Black People, and if not why?"

Pre-Order Here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/761928/quit-everything-by-franco-berardi/
In Quit Everything, Franco Berardi argues that this "depression" is actually conscious or unconscious withdrawal of psychological energy and a dis-investment of desire that he defines instead as "desertion". A desertion from political participation, from the daily grind of capitalism, from the brutal reality of climate collapse, and from a society which offers nothing but chaos and pain.
Berardi analyses why this desertion is on the rise and why more people are quitting everything in our age of political impotence and the rise of the far-right, asking if we can find some political hope in desertion amongst the ruins of a world on the brink of collapse.

Should we shrink the law? One of Britain’s leading social justice barristers puts the case against the constant expansion of the law into new areas, and its greater control over more and more of our lives.
Since 2016, Britain has been ruled by populists, who have promised to expand democracy and decrease the law by taking back power from abroad. Yet what these populists have actually done is institute a vast increase in new laws, made by ministers and not Parliament, regulating every aspect of our lives.
Against this backdrop of ever-increasing laws and regulations, Renton argues that instead of seeking change within the bounds of the law, social movements should rather look to their own ability to force change, their willingness to protest, occupy and strike.
Against the Law dares us to imagine a world in which workers are winning, and ecocide is treated with the urgency that it deserves. But as this book argues, this world can only become a reality if the movements of the oppressed choose to disengage from the law.

In Anglo-Saxon countries there is a new and distinctive form of state: the busybody state. This state is defined by an attachment to bureaucratic procedures for their own sake: the rule for the sake of a rule; the form for the sake of a form. Its insignias are the badge, the policy, the code and the procedure. The logic of the regulation is neither to represent an elite class interest, nor to serve the public, nor even to organise social relations with the greatest efficiency as with classic bureaucracy, but rather to represent regulation itself.
