roberta-faccani-(matia-bazar)-grido
Roberta Faccani is perhaps the most misunderstood Italian artist of the last twenty years... after a quick internet search, it emerges that few are willing to spend words of appreciation for her (her fans mainly concentrate on Facebook). It therefore appears blatantly evident that her detractors mainly lack objectivity because their judgments statistically tend to negatively highlight her remarkable vocal strength (mistaken for arrogance) which well matches her physical appearance and probably also her character (I say it plainly: she's an artist I appreciate also as a woman, and here I stop because I have nothing more to add on this matter).
Out of a hundred people, three (myself included) spend enthusiastic words for this great vocalist, and perhaps everyone overlooks that the fascinating Roberta deliberately uses her voice as a lethal weapon against mediocrity. Faccani, who seems to come from another planet, is like that, take it or leave it: overwhelming, excessive to the limit of bearability, and so sublimely intense as to appear - to those who grasp her intimate essence - transcendent and transcendental.
I have no reason to "defend" her (I don't know her and I believe she DOESN'T need official defenders, I can only appeal to my dismayed indignation towards all the incompetent and unsympathetic comments addressed to her in my FB post), I just need to listen to her: her range is astonishing, her emotional charge always at its peak, her vocal technique extraordinary, her unique ability to transport you to aesthetic dimensions otherwise unattainable, etc. etc....
However, all this doesn't interest those not in the field and it seems there are few even in this category who truly appreciate her.
Well, I want to go against the grain by stating without a shadow of a (my) doubt that she is one of the most talented performers ever heard since Italian light music exists BUT with two major problems - the cause of all her "woes" - destined to remain unresolved:
she replaced for a certain period of time a milestone of Italian pop singing for the "Matia Bazar": I refer to Antonella Ruggiero, perhaps irreplaceable within this pop group that crafted so many exquisite songs, certainly one of the best Italian singers of all time, hence a very uncomfortable legacy...
she (in)voluntarily aimed very high: the elective affinities with Mina, her true point of comparison, who is unattainable for anyone, not so much for vocal qualities, in this case comparable. Simply because she has had a highly successful artistic career in a favorable and unrepeatable historical period.
These are the reasons for a success underestimated compared to her infinite potential. There's already one Mina and one Ruggiero, considering that with the latter Faccani differs only in style and timbre (ethereal ultrasonic warbles for the former, solid materiality for the latter).
Moreover, Ruggiero strongly characterized the Matia Bazar sound contributing to 90% of their success: easy to understand why she's "irreplaceable".
Following are some multimedia testimonials that, in my opinion, are worth viewing with "tuned-in" ears. In the video below, her performance of "Grido d'Amore", a wonderful, incisive song tailored for her and sung for Matia Bazar at the Sanremo Festival in 2005. On this occasion, the original Genoese group has nothing to do with it... it's Faccani singing accompanied by the Sanremo orchestra. Period. Apart from some physiological flaws due to emotion and the many traps of the very difficult melodic line, the performance leaves you "with teeth in hand" (as Patrick Djivas used to say when he saw the seed of genius in someone). There are some covers on YouTube, but let's drop the subject without making further, unnecessary noise....
Next, an award she won, the Franco Enriquez Prize 2012: the singer also reveals her skills as a writer and composer on this occasion. We find her in a less forced (and less pompously media-driven) dimension compared to the previous video, where she once again demonstrates her extraordinary vocal talents and talks about her new profession as a theater actress (a sector I know well, that of theater), further proof of the volcanic emotional/ artistic energy of this splendid woman.
