What westerners believe about the world is almost entirely mythical. With the humiliation of American forces in Afghanistan this year, today's broadcast deals with the Soviet intervention in that country from late 1979 to 1989.
The Soviets did not lose militarily in Afghanistan and the war there did not affect Soviet internal politics at all. Causalities were low and the fighting was not high-intensity. The battles fought were entirely victories for the Soviet army.
The “defeat” was the creation of western, Chinese and Islamic press outlets and today is believed without much criticism. This broadcast delineates the factors that led to the Soviet withdrawal and the eventual defeat of the Afghan Communist government in the early 1990s.

Grandpa Dan discusses the cost of ringing freedom’s bell courtesy of the red white and blue. Do you think freedom is free buddy? Well it’s not! As it turns out, freedom costs trillions of dollars but don’t worry, you can’t really put a price on protecting our democracy and actually, we’re really getting a lot of bang for our buck. Sure, $13 billion dollars for a doomsday plane based on an airliner that already exists might sound like a lot of money but that’s a cheap price to pay in order to keep the President safe and able to run the smoldering ashes of what’s left of the country. Besides in such a scenario you wouldn’t even need to worry about the cost because you wouldn’t be on the doomsday plane, you’d be dead. While freedom isn’t free that doesn’t mean that every brilliant idea has to be expensive. How about taking a super slow offshore oil rig, loading it full of fuel and ammunition and (very slowly) towing it to China so that the Commies can understand that the screaming eagle means business? While we’re not given an actual price tag for this proposed project, it will no doubt be super effective and a total bargain. Let freedom ring (cha-ching!)!
