Ep. 5413 – Mike Maharrey: Saving the Republic by Abandoning the Empire – 11/13/2020
Scott talks to Mike Maharrey of the Tenth Amendment Center about the shameful state of U.S. foreign policy. In particular, Maharrey explains the way that congress has completely abdicated its role of declaring wars—instead, they have ceded that power fully to the president. Maharrey reminds us that all empires collapse eventually, and indeed that empire is often the final stage in a civilization’s existence. If we want to preserve our republic, he says, we must do so at the cost of abandoning our empire. Scott and Maharrey share the hope that Colonel Douglas Macgregor, recently appointed to a senior advisory role in the Pentagon, will be able to help us do so.
Muhammad Sahimi, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Southern California, discusses the consistently wrong warnings from Western and Israeli sources about an imminent Iranian nuclear weapon, the lack of outcry over the Shah's nuclear ambitions in the 1970s, clarification of Iran's obligations under the NPT and additional protocol/subsidiary agreements and how persistent lies about Iran's nuclear program overwhelm the efforts to debunk them.

Daphne Eviatar, Senior Associate in Law and Security for Human Rights First, discusses the Brookings Institution study that recommends codifying indefinite detention without trial, the government's refusal to release some Guantanamo detainees who won their habeas corpus hearings and how the never ending "war on terror" complicates the traditional practice of holding prisoners "for the duration."

Center for International Policy’s William Hartung, author of “The American Way of War is a Budget Breaker”, is interviewed about his new article “There’s Less Than Meets The Eye in Trump’s Saudi Arms Deal” on defenseone.com, on the huge new arms deal, which he writes is “a mix of offers already made and promises yet to be kept”. Hartung also talks at length about how these deals have an implied US security guarantee, and how the Saudi military has historically been a Potemkin army. Also discussed is the defense budget, how money is appropriated, and whether there is any hope to ever reign in the military industrial complex.

Gilbert Doctorow makes the case that President Trump’s seemingly clumsy diplomacy has actually had a positive effect on the international order, sometimes by accident, but largely through Trump’s own efforts to disguise his machinations as ham-handedness. Doctorow explains that had President Trump openly moved for a disruption of our alliances and a greater focus on his “America first” policies, he would have been met with greater opposition and perhaps even “removal”. As it stands, however, what appear to be souring relationships in Europe may actually be exactly what Trump wanted in the first place.
Gilbert Doctorow is an independent political analyst and was the European Coordinator of The American Committee for East-West Accord. He writes regularly for Consortium News. His latest book is “Does the United States Have a Future?”

Veteran journalist and UN correspondent Joe Lauria updates Scott on the latest from Syria and Iraq. The attack on Mosul is likely to begin in mid October, and Islamic state may have deserted large portions of the city. If true, it could mean less civilian casualties due to US aerial bombardment of the city during the Iraqi and Peshmerga operation. Lauria discusses the possibility that the ISIL fighters from Mosul may have left and gone to Syria, where they are fighting the Assad regime. Russia and the Assad regime are increasingly frustrated with and at odds with the Americans and their allies, and they’ve begun to attack Aleppo without restraint after the collapse of the cease fire. The Americans have responded by charging that the Russians are committing war crimes at the UN. Get all of the updates in this interview.
