A List Of Prepositions Would Be Boring
One of the challenges of learning to speak English is that native English speakers use short phrases which often have multiple meanings. The confusion arises when you take some prepositions and verbs, that mean one thing on their own and another when used together.
Rather than try to map out all the possible combinations, and learn a long list of get prepositions and verbs, we’ve taken some time over a few podcasts, to pick out the ones you are most likely to encounter and we explain each one, with examples.

Holding an English conversation in standard English says a lot about you, and not using standard English says even more about you, especially in the world of business and in the workplace. It’s interesting how much things have changed with the use of standard English in the UK.
An English Conversation In Standard English Cause I Care About You ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-conversation-standard-english/
Institutions, like the BBC, have embraced non standard English to be more inclusive of the many regional British people who don’t use standard English in the UK. The problem is there is still stigma and bias associated with people who speak using non standard English.
The good news for new English language learners is that I will certainly teach you standard English. You will avoid knowing about and using non standard English if you listen to Adept English. However, if you are learning by listening to films or English speaking TV, then you might pick up some bad English language habits without knowing it.
Knowing about non standard English and knowing when to use it or not use it is an advanced level of English language fluency. It can be fun and help you fit in if you can spot when people are using non standard English. You might even join in so you can fit in with others. The key here is you’re in control and you know when using standard English in a conversation is the right way to go.
Once, BBC television had echoed BBC radio in being a haven for standard English pronunciation. Then regional accents came in: a democratic plus. Then slipshod usage came in: an egalitarian minus. By now slovenly grammar is even more rife on the BBC channels than on ITV. In this regard a decline can be clearly charted... If the BBC, once the guardian of the English language, has now become its most implacable enemy, let us at least be grateful when the massacre is carried out with style.⭐ Clive James
Today we highlight some examples of non standard English, we discuss the prejudice and stigma that still exists for people who don’t use standard English. We also show that knowing even a little non standard English can be fun or help you fit into some social circumstances.

How To Learn Spoken English
Today we have an odd lessonwhere we talk about some old-fashioned English words, which admittedly you might not hear that much, but when you hear them, you might be interested to know what they are, and how to pronounce them. Just relax and smile as you learn spoken English with us today.
The reason this podcast came about is my daughter was looking at YouTube and watching a video of funny English words. Later I overheard a politician on TV using one of those words. We then talked about list of English words that often mean the same thing, often used in a humorous way which had us both laughing out loud.

Learn English 169 Podcast 100 Years Of English practice
A free learn English quickly podcast lesson from Adept English released weekly EVERY Monday and Thursday
This weeks short English practice podcast lesson talks about a centenarian (someone who has lived for 100 years, a century). Just imagine all the English practice this person has had throughout their lives. English language is changing all the time and when this person was born in 1918 the first world war was just ending. The English used in 1918 is so different to that in use around Britain today even native British English speakers must learn new phrases and vocabulary to keep up.
This podcast lesson also talks about the English language used for percentages and fractions. You might ask why would I ever need to learn English fractions? If you asked what the time is in the UK today almost, everyone would use a fraction to tell you the time. Half past 10, a quarter to 11, etc. Percentages are important too, nearly all the shops will show price discounts as percentages and someone might say “Wow I got 50% off my shopping today”.
So a fascinating English practice podcast talking about being a 100 years old and what that means for you in the UK. The English language you would use when talking about fractions and percentages.
As with all our learn English speaking podcasts, the audio and the pdf transcript of this English lesson are free to download. So have fun learning to speak English and don't forget to tell your friends about us.
