the-abomination-of-desolation
What is the Abomination of Desolation spoken of by Daniel the Prophet?
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: (Matthew 24:15-16)
Jesus spoke these words in the midst of answering two questions from his disciples. He addresses this to those which be in Judaea and I believe to them that were living at that time. They would see the abomination that he spoke of. It would have been Matthew who parenthetically adds, (whoso readeth, let him understand:). This is an explicit instruction to look in the book of Daniel to understand exactly what it was Jesus was telling those inhabitants of Judaea that they would see. We find the word. Abomination twice in the Book of Daniel.
Daniel 11:31 is a reference to Antiochus Epiphanies slaughtering a pig on the alter in the Temple, so here we get a definition: An abomination that maketh desolate is a wrong sacrifice in the Temple. In this instance it did not bring about the desolation of the Temple as it was not the Hebrew Nation which was responsible for the act.
Daniel 12:11 This is the direct reference to what Jesus was was telling the Judaean's to be on the lookout for. When was this wrong sacrifice set up in the Temple? I'll show you in the scripture:
Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: (Hebrews 9:6-8)
This (underlined) was the authorized sacrifice for sin until the Messiah came and sacrificed Himself.
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (Hebrews 9:11-12)
John's witness is that Jesus said, "it is finished" before he gave up the ghost. Matthew records:
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; (Matthew 27:50-51)
What was finished? And what does the renting of the veil in the Temple represent? The sacrifice for sin, once for all was finished when Jesus gave up the ghost. The veil being rent in the temple signifies that Jesus was the way into the holiest of all so that the blood of goats and calves was no longer an acceptable sacrifice for sin. He caused the sacrifice and the oblation to cease in the middle of the week just as the Prophet Daniel wrote.
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. (Daniel 9:27)
And he confirmed the covenant:
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 3:1)
Ironically I find this quote on Jimmy DeYoung's website about the Anti-Christ filling this role:
"Notice that the Antichrist, who I believe is alive and well on planet earth today, will not "sign a peace treaty" but instead "confirm" this treaty. The Hebrew word used here is "gabar" which is never translated "sign" but always "confirm", to strengthen or make stronger. There will be peace treaties on the table that have not been normalized, they are not working, waiting for some "world leader" to come along and "confirm" them." (prophecytoday.com/devo/2007_11_28_archive.php)
Now if Jesus was the messenger of the covenant as foretold by Malachi, who better to confirm the covenant than the one who was to fulfill it, even the messenger of the covenant ?
