**Allan and Barbara Pease- The Definitive Book of Body Language Review** The study of body language has always fascinated me, not in a Sherlock Holmes way, but in sociologically as part of culture. Allan and Barbara Pease’s book was a welcome recommendation and equally a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Allan and Barbara Pease write in a humorous and approachable way that, at the same time, doesn’t rob the book of concrete content. The authors are clearly experts in their field of study and frequently cite their own experiments and the works of their academic peers without rambling. Rather than an interpersonally challenging read, The Definite Book of Body Language was enlightening and educational. IBTI happens to be my first truly intercultural experience and so the book highlights and raises some of the issues that I have found myself stumbling through. In this sense, I really wish that I had been given this book to read before attending! However, the experience has established a relational and experiential base to work from that no amount of printed words ever could. In this sense, it was a very ‘confirming’ read. I laughed very much when reading about how pointing the index and little finger out implies that a man’s wife had been unfaithful in Italian circles when it means little or nothing in England. Unfortunately, I learnt this the hard way. Equally, as an ‘arts’ minded person who is often considering how things appear, this book that dissects and interrogates every single act as ritually, physiologically, and socially important was a breath of fresh air (and confirmation that I need not seek mental help). For example, I remember walking in a local town at home and speaking to my friend about how I had been contemplating on cultural norms for an art project using simple but significant cultural symbols. I suggested to him that the reddening of a female’s lips using paint as ‘sexy’ subconsciously mirrors the blood rushing to female body parts. He laughed said it was an ‘interesting thought’ and commented on how I had probably been thinking too much: Chapter 15 of the book suggests otherwise. The approach to body language that considers the study as majoring on spotting lies is fully refuted by the authors. The intent of the book is not to give people tools by which they can now manipulate others but rather to give people a better understanding of acceptable cultural codes. To the author, this study is no different than teaching people what clothing to wear to different occasions. Despite all the intrigue surrounding the study of body language (the amount of students who requested that I “teach them something” when seen reading the book was unparalleled!), we all do it. This was a big and welcome focus throughout the book. Body language isn’t spooky or for trained Scotland Yard detectives: it is as much as part of our communications as our words are. I was also quite surprised as to how many body signals are not learnt. I have heard it said that humans are the animals that are born with the cleanest behavioral slate and so our learning process is somewhat longer and equally more rapid than other animals. However, a small but significant part of what we do is unlearned and quite unavoidable. One of the most challenging things to read as a serial arm-folder, is that if we are comfortable with folded arms, it is because we are comfortable with what suits our inner attitude most. The ‘most comfortable’ position suits us because it mirrors and literally embodies our internal attitudes. This has led me to continually question every gesture that I make over the past two weeks!
