Just what exactly will follow the American century? This is the question Randall L. Schweller explores in his provocative assessment of international politics in the twenty-first century.Schweller considers the future of world politics, correlating our reliance on technology and our multitasking, distracted, disorganized lives with a fragmenting world order. He combines the Greek myth of the Golden Apple of Discord, which explains the start of the Trojan War, with a look at the second law of thermodynamics, or entropy. In the coming age, Schweller writes, disorder will reign supreme as the world succumbs to... entropy, an irreversible process of disorganization that governs the direction of all physical changes taking place in the universe. Interweaving his theory of global disorder with issues on the world stagecoupled with a disquisition on board games and the cell phone app Angry BirdsSchwellers thesis yields astonishing insights. Maxwells Demon and the Golden Apple will appeal to leaders of multinational corporations and government programs as well as instructors of undergraduate courses in international relations.** Just what exactly will follow the American century? Plotted, Shot, and Painted stakes out new territory for feminist biblical criticism. It considers what happens to biblical women in popular culture, in art and in film, and it foregrounds questions about how gender interests affect interpretation and about the roles and responsibilities of commentators and readers. This second revised edition contains an additional chapter, Lot and his Daughters, and an expanded chapter on Delilah. Exums mastery of biblical scholarship, film criticism, feminist theory, and a vast literary and artistic repertoire is overwhelming ... a splendid work of analysis and critical thinking ... The book introduces the reader to an extraordinarily rich variety of critical experiences, which far transcends the limitations of conventional biblical scholarship. Francis Landy, Prooftexts ... a joy to read-still learned, but also witty and passionate. Here is a new kind of biblical criticism. We are talking here of things that really matter, things that have caused hurt to women and also to men, and things that could be made better ... It is about cinema, art, literature, popular song, and pornography. In other words, it places the Bible exactly where it should be, at the heart of our cultural experience from high art to low art ... David Jasper, Biblical Interpretation ... essential for all concerned with literary, feminist, and cultural readings and representation of biblical texts. W. Lee Humpheys, Religious Studies Review

In 1950 the British government accorded diplomatic recognition to the newly founded Peoples Republic of China. But it took 22 years for Britain to establish full diplomatic relations with China. How far was Britains China policy a failure until 1972? This book argues that Britain and China were involved in the everyday Cold War, or a continuous process of contestation and cooperation that allowed them to normalize their confrontation in the absence of full diplomatic relations. From Vietnam and Taiwan to the mainland and Hong Kong, Chinas everyday Cold War against Britain was marked by diplomatic ritual, propaganda rhetoric and symbolic gestures. Rather than pursuing a failed policy of appeasement, British decision-makers and diplomats regarded engagement or negotiation with China as the best way of fighting the everyday Cold War. Based on extensive British and Chinese archival sources, this book examines not only the high politics of Anglo-Chinese relations, but also how the British diplomats experienced the Cold War at the local level. *

Transcending Capitalism explains why many influential midcentury American social theorists came to believe it was no longer meaningful to describe modern Western society as capitalist, but instead preferred alternative terms such as postcapitalist, postindustrial, or technological. Considering the discussion today of capitalism and its global triumph, it is important to understand why a prior generation of social theorists imagined the future of advanced societies not in a fixed capitalist form but in some course of development leading beyond capitalism. Howard Brick locates this postcapitalist vision within a long history of social theory and ideology. He challenges the common view that American thought and culture utterly succumbed in the 1940s to a conservative cold war consensus that put aside the reform ideology and social theory of the early twentieth century. Rather, expectations of the shift to a new social economy persisted and cannot be disregarded as one of the elements contributing to the revival of dissenting thought and practice in the 1960s. Rooted in a politics of social liberalism, this vision held influence for roughly a half century, from its interwar origins until the right turn in American political culture during the 1970s and 1980s. In offering a historically based understanding of American postcapitalist thought, Brick also presents some current possibilities for reinvigorating critical social thought that explores transitional developments beyond capitalism. **
