But really though... When are planks a useful exercise? I'm not a fan of most ab, or core as they're called now, exercises. They focus too much on training muscles and not enough on training movements. There aren't many reasons to practice holding a push-up position for minutes on end.
I find it much more useful to train plank-type positions as a stepping stone so that you are more stable as you transition into more complex movements. Planks are building blocks so that you can more easily learn more complex movements. Not an exercise to train the core.

A balance beam is a great tool and it can be a lot of fun to use. But you can also use a balance beam to build full-body strength, mobility, and stability! We're going to take the yoga poses downward dog and cobra pose and tweak them just a little bit to focus on ab work. This will be a great core workout!
We're going to start by getting into a push-up position and slowly letting our hips drop toward the floor. Make sure not to let your lower back flex more than the rest of your spine! You'll know you did if you start to feel a pinch in your lower back.
Now once your hips are as low as you can comfortably go, don't just use your hands to push yourself back up. Instead, tighten your abs and use them to pull your hips up straight away from the floor.
As your hips get higher, your arms will start to move overhead. Once this happens, keep your abs tight and think about shifting your hips back toward your feet.
When you first start doing this exercise, start slow. Only do a few reps at a time and don't drop your hips too much. Some lower ab soreness is expected. As you get used to the movement add more reps and sets!

Today I want to show you a new self-massage technique I just learned a couple days. You can really fix your posture with the calf and foot release! I've used it a couple times and dramatically altered how easily it is for me to maintain a more upright posture.
This self-massage comes from the anatomy trains book I have dived back into. It's a really simple fascial release technique that only requires a ball for the bottom of your foot and your knee for your calf. In only a couple sessions I've already made great progress!

Today's beginner natural movement session will be focusing on hip balance and mobility. You really don't need any equipment for this movement session but it may help to have something to assist your balance while doing single leg work. I'm using a Stick Mobility product but almost anything similar will work.
This natural movement workout will focus on a lot of single leg work and give you some simple movements you can scale up easily to continue to make use of the movement session as your fitness improves.

If you're any good at settings goals, you know what you want and you've even figured out how to get there. Now for the hard part. You have to implement your plan.
If you're anything like me, you have a lot of goals you'd like to hit. This can create a lack of focus that'll leave you bouncing from goal to goal.
Instead create your own 30 day challenge where you focus intensely on a single goal for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days you can reevaluate and either move on or work toward it for another 30 days.
This incremental approach will seem like you're not getting much done, but before long all the little goals will add up to huge progress!!!

Alright! Let's talk about why there's no such thing as out of shape. We think of being out of shape as not being physically fit or having packed on a few pounds. But what it actually means is being specialized at inaction. The example I share is that if you spend hours a day watching TV, your body will become very good at watching TV.
The more movement you work into your daily life, the less specialized your body and the more adaptable you are physically. Your body composition is largely a reflection of diet. Your ability to perform is much more about your movement habits. So if you're out of shape, what you really need to do is adjust your lifestyle and your habits to include more movement.

A few days I went out for a hike. I thought it would be a fun opportunity to chat and share some beautiful mountain trails. The joke was on me... I made all kinds of mistakes on this Colorado Mountain Hike! The reality is, I really screwed up this video.
It didn't come out anything like I planned. But, I still pulled together the footage and came out with a fun video. I hope you like how this filming fiasco turned out! I hope to do more stuff like this in the future, without all the issues of course. This is the real reason we stay healthy. So we can do the thing we love!
