Being a boom operator is an extremely physical job - perhaps the most physical at times. Thanks to digital recording, takes are getting longer and longer so we boom operators need to take advantage of anything we can to do our jobs while keeping our bodies from being torn apart. In this video I review two products made by Fleetwood Films designed to help boom operators and ENG sound mixers to do their jobs without killing ourselves.
The Boom Buddy and Boom Swinger are available exclusively in the US at Gotham Sound:
NYC@gothamsound.com (212) 629-9430 or
ATL@gothamsound.com (404) 855-2255.
To see their listing of the Boom Swinger: https://www.gothamsound.com/product/boom-swinger
And their listing of the Boom Buddy: https://www.gothamsound.com/product/boom-buddy
For more information about either product, goto: http://www.Boom-Buddy.com
Thank you to fellow boom op Hugo Kundert for his assistance with the location shooting.
Full Disclosure:
Fleetwood Film did send the Boom Swinger and Boom Buddy in exchange for a fair review. I do get to keep them following the review but I'm not going to allow it to influence my review in any way so you can expect it to be an honest review.

Audio delay is often ignored but something to understand because it can have drastic effects on your sound and even affect your performance. Delay can be either environmental, real world or digital and processing related and understanding both will help round you out as a sound person.
If your microphones are too far away from talent when they are yelling, their voice could be a frame or two off from the picture. Being able to roughly calculate the delay will help you adjust in post.
Adding too many real time processes can also affect your monitor feed if you're listening to your audio LIVE. Your headphones audio could be off from what you're saying and that can cause you to trip over your words.
Speech jamming occurs when the audio you say is so delayed that when you hear it a few hundred milliseconds later, your brain pauses to try to comprehend what you're hearing and that throws off what you are trying to say. Turning off real time processing or changing up your VST chain to lower latency plug-ins can help if you find yourself affected my latency speech jamming.

Note: The Shark has many uses. It's designed to detect and eliminate microphone feedback thru a PA speaker but also contains a noise gate, compressor, upto 2.5 seconds of delay and contains a preamp with phantom power.

It's about time I review this piece of gear. It saves me a lot of time and does it's job incredibly well. Once you see the build quality and performance, I'm sure you'll agree.
What am I talking about? The Rycote USM-kit studio microphone shockmount and pop filter. Unlike many conventional shockmounts, the USM uses Rycote Invision Lyre plastic isolators instead of elastic. There are advantages and they will be discussed. The USM can be purchased for around $80 but if you add the adjustable shockmount for an additional $20, the entire system will be complete and ready for literally... whatever.
Consider using one of these Amazon Affiliated links to purchase. I get a small referral fee if you do but you pay nothing additional. Thanks in advance:

In a world filled with artificial noises, you have the power to shut them down and get your recording environment quiet. Even in someplace like a hotel room, there are many things you can do to quiet down your environment. In this video I'm going to show you a few tricks us sound professionals use to get a hotel room quiet enough to record in.
Note: There was NO POST PROCESSING done to this audio at all.
You may also note that I'm using a large diaphragm condenser microphone in this video, the Samson C01. In a noisy environment, it will pick up a lot of undesirable sounds - moreso than many other kinds of microphones would. You can see me compare 10 kinds of microphones in this untreated room right here: https://youtu.be/IugYm4T503o

How good is the quality of YouTube's Audio Streams? Depending on the quality of the originally uploaded video and when the video was uploaded, YouTube compressed and converted both video and audio to allow for faster streaming to viewers. Those quality standards have changed throughout the years but now they have a system down that they seem to be pleased with. In a moment you'll know exactly how good the audio stream is that you're listening to. Sound Speeds!

It's very rare that I can't recommend something that I review on this channel but this is definitely something to avoid. From the awkward weighted plastic headset to the output jack on the receiver that doesn't work properly, it's very difficult for me to say anything right about this product. I didn't in the review so I'll say it here:
Pros:
- It comes with appropriate accessories
- Bluetooth mode works
- There are 10 channels you can switch between
Cons:
-Watch the review!
In this review I state twice that the included adapter is 1/8" to 1/4" or 3.5mm to 6.5mm but this needs to be corrected to 3.5mm to 6.35mm.
Note: Just because I can't recommend this Tonor headset doesn't mean you should avoid the brand and their products. Some of their products are packed with features and decent quality for the price.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I did receive this product and get to keep it in exchange for a fair review.

As the unions and studios look like they are working well in the negotiations of new contracts, the film industry is greatly looking forward to production returning. That said, many Producers are looking for the best deal on union crew and not wanting to pay full rates - knowing the competition will be high for those few jobs. Don't accept lowball rates! It will hurt the whole industry and in this video I'll explain why then follow that up with why you should hire union crew on union shows.
