11 Common Problems With The Pontiac GTO (2004-2006) • Cars Simplified
The 2004, 2005, and 2006 Pontiac GTOs are great cars, but it's good to know about their common problems and issues before buying one, daily driving one that has been sitting, or adding a bunch of power.

The LS engines in these GTOs have a front sump design which can cause oil to pull away during hard acceleration, leading to there being no oil there for the oil pump to pull in.

A wiring harness behind the glove box is known to wear through the insulation, shorting some circuits and diverting power to others.

LED lighting is awesome, but GTOs seem to have an issue with one particular bulb pair being LEDs instead of a more traditional bulb. The taillights seem to deactivate the traction control whenever not enough amperage passes through their circuit, so putting in a 6 ohm resistor parallel to one of the tail light circuits allows for enough amperage to make the problem go away.

These bushings cause suspension issues but also create weird handling conditions under braking, making the car unstable, unpredictable, and less safe. Fortunately, replacements are available in three varieties.

The actual differential unit on these cars doesn't whine, the final drive gears do. But, since the whole differential case/assembly is often just called the differential, people refer to this problem as differential whine. This might be fixed with a proper gear alignment (which is usually the fix on other cars) but Torco makes a gear oil that is known to quiet down GTO differentials.

The body control module wiring harness cluster is a well-known problem on these 2004 to 2006 Pontiac GTOs, and even if your GTO is fine right now, you should perform this preventative maintenance to make sure it stays fine. The wires gradually get rubbed through, causing weird electrical issues that tend to be different every time. Between that and the limited working space in there, it's FAR better to do this as preventative maintenance instead of as an electrical repair.

The rear marker lamps on 2018/2019/2020/2021 Subaru Crosstrek and Subaru Impreza models are located in the taillight housing and are the only light facing the side. Removing the taillight requires the removal of two bolts that are covered by plastic discs.
Replacing the bulbs requires twisting the marker lamp socket and pulling it out of the housing. Wearing gloves, just in case the glass breaks, remove the old bulb and install the new one. Activate the lights to make sure it is working; a socket or wiring issue could be an issue, but also, if an LED is being used as a replacement, check the polarity by installing the bulb in the other direction (rotate it 180 degrees).

Ross Chastain's wall ride at Martinsville Speedway was a wild way to secure a spot in the final run for the NASCAR Cup Championship! Instead of just another Hail Melon reaction video, Steve discusses how this move worked, why it could only happen at Martinsville, what NASCAR needs to do about it, and if this move could show up in other forms of motorsports.
The "wall ride" is a move that is well known in digital motorsports, since every kid struggling to win a race has tried it at least once. In games like Gran Turismo, where vehicle damage is minimal or nonexistent, the riding the wall has almost no consequences, unless the game has some sort of collision penalty. What Ross Chastain did on the last lap of the 2022 Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway is something that has never been seen before outside of video games, and no one thought it would actually work.
However, now we know that, at least under the right conditions, it can work! What happens now, especially with one race left in the season at another small track with minimal banking? Will another driver attempt a wall ride? Will a few drivers give it a go? Will this decide the championship finale at Phoenix? Lets discuss the possibilities!
While the finish of this race was fantastic, I'm not sure I want it to happen again, as it will be less impressive and probably more dangerous. Definitely worthy of the 2022 highlights reel, though!

Cabin air filters often have an air flow direction printed on them, sometimes just an arrow. Without any obvious markings, how do you tell which direction the air flows so you can put your cabin air filter in correctly? Does it even matter? That and more is explained in this video, hopefully providing enough information to make the understanding intuitive.
Looking for the blower? If you can't see fan blades through that cabin filter service port, you can check beneath the area for a blower motor. These are usually a cylinder of plastic that points down towards the passenger's footwell. If you find that and the cabin air filter port is horizontal and directly above the cylinder, the air flow direction is down. This is the typical blower motor mounting location, because it is relatively easy to design and service.
