Replacing the bake or broil heating element in an electric oven is one of the easiest appliance repairs you'll ever do... IF you unplug or kill power to range first. If you don't kill power before you try to remove the element, you'll turn a simple, plug n' chug job that only requires a screwdriver into job into one that requires wire repair tools. That's because you're probably going to arc or burn one of the terminals attached to the heating element as shown in this video. Watch with amazed bewilderment as The Appliance Guru expertly replaces the burnt wire terminal and completes that the client started but couldn't finish.
You can buy the replacement bake element for any brand and model of electric oven or range: http://bit.ly/NSRnWf

A dryer lint filter that's choked in with lint can cause some weird, surprising problems. In this case, the customer called me in because his dryer was making a weird whistling noise while running. A quick check of the lint filter revealed the problem. After the lint filter was cleaned, the problem disappeared!

This is an excerpt from a Master Samurai Tech workshop where we worked through four case studies on old skool dryers. In this webinar, we took a step back from our fancy electronics to the good ol' days of simple AC circuits. Well, I say "simple", and that is true -- but engineers back then had to pull out all the stops and do some pretty cool circuit tricks to get the functionality they wanted. This means that, to really understand what's going on in these older circuits, you need to have a firm grasp of both AC circuits and the technology used.
In this webinar, we:
* Worked through 4 real-world dryer case studies that have faked out today's technicians
* Gained a deeper understanding of basic AC circuits and dryer components like start relays, motor centrifugal switches, and TCOs and how they function in dryer circuits
* Explained the famous “loads in series” configuration and showed it in action
* Illustrated the non-analytical troubleshooting technique of jumping the switch
* Explained how TCOs operate and why they go open
* Explained why amp measurements are always the first SOP move when troubleshooting any AC circuit and especially when a dryer TCO has opened.
* Learned why sharp techs prefer live tests over ohms tests any-freakin-day
Summary of the Case Studies:
Case Study 1:
* How does the push to start relay work in the circuit?
* Does Timer switch 4 always complete the Neutral for the motor regardless of its switched position?
* How does the centrifugal switch function?
* What does the switch below the “Temperature Selector” switch do?
* How does the buzzer operate?
Case Study 2:
* Dryer motor no-go
* Press start button, hear a humming at the start button
* Disassembled the dryer thinking the blower was jammed
* Ordered the start “switch” based on the customer’s “diagnosis”
Case Study 3:
* No moisture sensors
* Is Auto Dry cycle controlled by the timer?
* How does the dryer know when the clothes are dry?
* What component failure could cause this dryer to run and cycle heat but not advance the timer?
* What troubleshooting move should you make to prove the problem?
Case Study 4:
* Dryer no heat
* Tech found open TCO. Replaced both the TCO and Operating Thermostat
* A month later, callback: same problem, replaced same parts
* Next day, another callback: same problem. Noticed terminal on Hi Limit was loose and wire corroded.
* How could he have found the loose connection on the first trip?

In this short video, The Appliance Guru reveals the ominous tell-tale banging sound of a broken drum support spider in a Samsung front-load washer. And don't worry, Samsung is not alone in this-- this is a typical sound for all front-loaders with this failure and all brands are subject to it.
This particular washer is only three years old. This is normally a terminal event in a front load washer but Samsung is stepping up and making a concession to the owner toward a new machine.

In this video, I demonstrate some very Non-PCM (parts changing money) techniques for troubleshooting an inoperative evaporator fan problem in a Maytag (jazz board) refrigerator. To accurately diagnose the voltage reading on my meter on this one I needed to:
* use the schematic to see how the board was supposed to function in the evap fan motor circuit
* distinguish whether I was measuring voltage or voltage drop on my meter to identify a suspected open switch
* know how to use a jumper wire to jump out the suspected open "switch" and prove my conclusions
* know how input impedance on my meter in LoZ vs VAC affects my circuit voltage measurements
* understand the electrical concept of "loads in series".
There were no visible failures or burn marks on this board. I had to deduce the cause of the problem from my meter readings and using my jumper wire to prove my conclusions.
The sad fact is that many people doing "professional" appliance repair in the US today are completely unable to do this type of troubleshooting and would have replaced the evaporator fan only to find that didn't fix the problem. They are the Parts Changing Monkeys (PCMs) who are the scourge of our trade.
But the good news is that ignorance is 100% curable with appliance repair training! The problem is that for many of these PCMs, laziness or arrogance gets in the way and prevents them from learning these essential troubleshooting skills.
In the past 5 years, we have trained over 1500 men and women on how to troubleshoot and think like real technicians making them top notch techs in the field, earning superior income, running profitable businesses, and setting an example for others. We are bringing back the long lost art of troubleshooting to the appliance repair trade. Learn more at http://mastersamuraitech.com

This short little video shows you how to enter program mode in Bosch SHE SHU model dishwashers. You'll want to enter program mode to retrieve error codes, which can help inform your troubleshooting strategy. You can also run the test program, which is helpful in diagnosing individual loads in the dishwasher.
