how long can you go without feeding sourdough starter #homestead #sourdough #starter #experiment
Early in 2020 when stores were out of things like bread and yeast, i posted a video on how to make sourdough starter which has been a staple on my homestead for the previous 7 years. I make a weekly bread most weeks and one question i was asked was how long could you go without feeding sourdough starter? I really didn't know the answer because the longest mine ever went was maybe 3 months tops. So since i had this starter i made for the youtube video, i decided to do an experiment. I last fed this sourdough around Oct 20, 2020 and it sat in my refrigerator all that time in a mason jar. Yes, the flour separated from the liquid and it fermented into alcohol but in 2 feedings i baked with it. By the way, this unfed sourdough starter smelled heavenly. The 2 feedings i gave it over 24 hours was 2 tablespoons flour and 4 tablespoons water. 12 hours later i saw bubbles which looked very promising so i added 1/4 cup flour and 1/4 cup water and 12 hours later it was just as vigorous as the sourdough i bake with weekly. So from my experiment, we know you can go at least 1 year, 365 days of neglecting your sourdough and its still perfect. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYC25GbrscM
went out to check on the baby chicks this morning. There were 12 chicks when i went to bed and only 9 when i woke up. First let me say, i used to have pet snakes. I'm not afraid of snakes. I respect them. But anything that kills animals which i raise to be self sufficient must go. There are no second chances or forgiveness.
So i find a snake in the chicken coop and his belly is so full he can't leave. There are also 3 x 9 day old chicks missing. I located 2 dead in the coop and the 3rd was obvious where it was when i extracted the snake.
This was going to be a much longer video but i cut most of it due to youtube policies against harming animals. But i left the part about how to get the snake safely out of the coop because that is educational and might be something you can use if this ever happens to you.
I'm having one heck of a time raising chickens this year when previously it was easy peasy. Guess I've been gone too long fighting cancer.

I post these slow motion bee hive videos often. Let me tell you why: There is nothing i do on the homestead that is more enjoyable and relaxing than sitting inches away from the beehive entrance in the apiary and watching the bees fly in and out of the bee hive. I can literally get lost and lose track of time watching them, listening to the sounds they make. It is so mesmerizing. I can only compare the experience to when you see a seashell on the ground and no matter what age you are, you will always pick it up and place it against your ear and close your eyes and for a brief moment you are transported somewhere else. If you have never experienced watching bees, you really should. It is such a great way to release stress.
There are a lot more slow motion bee videos in the bee playlist

Sorry this video is so long ... I'm sure I probably should have split it into two videos but basically they are similar content. What I am doing in this video is checking on my two latest swarm captures and robbing resources from stronger hives to make sure these new hives have everything they need to be successful.
I have mostly switched over to using langstroth hives in my apiary but I have several warre hives also. I mostly use the warre hives as swarm traps these days, except I caught so many swarms in such a short period of time ... I have literally ran out of beehives so had to use the warre hives.
So i borrow a frame of honey from a langstroth hive to give to a new langstroth hive (swarm #3) that doesn't have any drawn comb and has a fresh swarm captured in it. Then I put a warre bar back into a warre hive that has swarm #2 in it and I used that frame to bait the 3rd swarm I caught.
This spring has been absolutely crazy in the apiary and I am so glad I found so many swarms this year, especially since the cost of bees has sky rocketed AND reputable suppliers have not been very ummmm how can I say this and still be nice ..... reputable suppliers have not been very reputable or dependable or reliable :)

When foods started to taste horrible, I started looking for different recipes. I found these two cookbooks on amazon that were for cancer patients experiencing foods that tasted bad. I browsed through the recipe book and basically used a suggestion to not eat or try to eat your favorite foods while getting chemo and radiation so that you didn't associate poor taste with them. Since I am not a huge fish fan, I picked this recipe as my first one and to my surprise not only could I actually eat it, but it wasn't repulsive to my messed up taste buds. If that holds true after cancer treatment is left to be determined ... but I wanted to share this tripe citrus cod recipe with others ..... it may keep you off a feeding tube.

I linked to the original video and 4 week update in the top right video cards.
I was rather surprised when i went to toss out the sweet potatoes from my experiment "can you grow sweet potatoes from store bought sweet potatoes?" and found two small sprouts. Although it took forever to sprout, maybe it will produce a bountiful harvest and make it worthwhile. That means the experiment must continue now .... time will tell. Dont forget to subscribe, hit the notification bell, and follow me along to see how this experiment ends.
Thanks for watching!
God bless you!
God bless your family!

People sure are funny these days. You ever try to duct tape something on the outside of stucco? It doesn't stick does it? Its because its not stucco tape, it duck tape .... it sticks really well on ducks! Which brings me to cast iron.....I mean, i know everything about cast iron cooking because i invented it. You heard that right, i am the very first professional cast iron user in the whole wide world. I invented cast iron and therefore i invented cast iron cooking because i was like "this new cutting edge technology will bring the world together someday". I know how it's supposed to work because i invented it. Follow my methods and you will always be right! If you don't, it will be the beginning of the second coming (not to count, all the wasted food i will impart upon you, peasants!).
