"Orrin is desperate to escape life’s crushing banalities. Enter Dores, a charismatic Spanish librarian he befriends on Instagram. With a gratuitous job offer on the cards, he travels to León and begins a night shift in a place where the broken and weary congregate in healing silence. The medieval library is painted with images of raw and deformed beauty, rivers of anguish, self-torment, lonely exile, and unexplained sorrows. As Orrin explores blackest shadows of the library, he discovers further paintings of a dozen children riding a giant goat glowing with human vitality. He’s about to become Isidora’s pawn. You’ll see what she wants you to see..."

There were a lot of books announced after and during the Bram Stoker Awards! Sure, some were already out, ad there are even more to come, but it seemed like a super full month.
You can see more of this eerie eye-candy on https://horror.org/newreleases/ and click though to learn more of the HWA author's titles, or check https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror for even more! That is where I keep a running list of all the books mentioned on the show.

Today we talk about Red by Jack Ketchum. It is a Typical Book.
"The old man hears them before he sees them, the three boys coming over the hill, disturbing the peace by the river where he’s fishing. He smells gun oil too, too much oil on a brand-new shotgun. These aren’t hunters, they’re rich kids who don’t care about the river and the fish and the old man.
Or his dog. Red is the name of the old man’s dog, his best friend in the world. And when the boys shoot the dog—for nothing, for simple spite—he sees red, like a mist before his eyes. And before the whole thing is done there’ll be more red. Red for blood…"
I have not watched the film but really wanted to read the book beforehand. While Red is not necessarily a horror novel, neither are most of Ketchum’s stories. He is counted in horror, I believe, for the feeling he gives readers which gives name to our cherished genre - the emotion of being horrified. This book does not let the reader off easy, and while there are no overt ‘horror elements’ the first chapter is a terrifying and maddening scene. There is no one that can stomach that first chapter and then not read on to see it through.
One must.
One owes it to the character, the writer, and themselves. I’ll cover more on this when I talk about Red and the other books I’ve read for the #horrorin24 readathon on Typical Books via YouTube. Suffice it to say, I enjoyed this story. The realism plays well and will stick with me.
While the story could be summed up as old-man Avery Ludlow versus the McCormack clan, the characters were really one-note; but aren’t we all? The realism worked with that, however, so I didn’t mind. The dialogue was very true-to-form as well. It was a very small town and I felt transplanted to the place, the fishing creek, the countryside farm at night.
4.5/5 - Books scorer of 91 which is unsurprising considering what an enduring classic this is.

Today on Typical Books with Lydia we have The Haunting of Gillespie House by Darcy Coates!
Gillespie House is a thing of dreams to me. A modernized old mansion - all of the remnants of its former glory tucked up into the attic, a crumbling graveyard adjacent. Perfection!
That it is short I liked, as this was expanded from a short story there was only so much story to tell. Elle starts out curious and travels through the house and time becoming more determined to find explanations in history despite many terrifying nights alone.
This reminded me very much of Darling, starring Lauren Ashley Carter. It is far more modern, and far more bloody, but if you like this lone girl angle it is a good fit. The Others also comes to mind here. It is not the top of the pile when it comes to Darcy Coates, but a quick, quiet read all the same.
Now it was not a very creepy read, but I enjoyed the atmosphere very much as it lent itself to my memories of an old farmhouse. There was something vaguely Lovecraftian about the grounds and the house itself as well. Not in the mythos sense, as Lovecraft is a different thing to me than most, but in the isolation and the tricks old landscapes play on the mind.
