Abraham was Saved from Idolatry
About 2000 B.C. God called Abraham away from all the idolatry of Babylon. Abram lived in the Ur of the Chaldees. Babylon was also known as the realm of the Chaldeans. Abram was an idolator, he worshipped the images of the gods of his land. God saved him from that idol worship. Listen to Joshua:
Joshua 24:2-3 (NKJV) And Joshua Said To All The People, “Thus Says The Lord God Of Israel: ‘Your Fathers, Including Terah, The Father Of Abraham And The Father Of Nahor, Dwelt On The Other Side Of The River In Old Times; And They Served Other Gods. 3 Then I Took Your Father Abraham From The Other Side Of The River, Led Him Throughout All The Land Of Canaan, And Multiplied His Descendants And Gave Him Isaac.
When God saved Abram from idols, and then God led him into the Promised Land and gave him the nation of Israel as his descendant. But a thousand years later, in the ninth century B. C., Israel had returned to the same idol worship Abraham had been saved from, under the influence of wicked Jezebel (see 1 Kings 16:30-33). At this time the cult was worshiped under the name of Baal.
By the time of the prophet Jeremiah, the idolatrous worship of Babylon’s religion, Abraham was saved from, permeated the nation of Israel. Please turn with me to Jeremiah 44.
Jeremiah 44: The Queen of Heaven’s
Idolatrous Religion
The words “Queen of Heaven” are found in five verses in the Bible (Jeremiah 7:18; 44:17-19, 25).
In Jeremiah, we are introduced to this whole idolatrous form of worship.
Do you know where the Queen of Heaven came from? It came right out of Egyptian idolatry, Isis and Osiris. It has nothing to do with the New Testament at all. And if you have ever heard that Roman Catholics say the Queen of Heaven is Mary and wondered where that came from—look at these words in Ezekiel 8:12-16.
The prophet Ezekiel is taken by God into the temple, the house of God; and he sees that there are idols there and God is very unhappy. And just to see what is offending God so greatly, he’s shown this scene:
There it is, the idolatry of Babel exported to Israel: the worship of the virgin goddess in Jeremiah 44, the worship of her son as they were weeping the 40 days awaiting his resurrection in Ezekiel 8.
Semiramis, Lent
& Romanism
Let me just give you some interesting details from a book entitled, “The Two Babylons” by Alexander Hislop. The worship of Semiramis throughout history has often had these elements:
• Semiramis was called the Queen of Heaven;
• Semiramis was worshipped by the offering of a wafer, or cake;
• Semiramis began the practice of 40 days of weeping over Tammuz before the feast of celebrating his resurrection.
• These mystery cults around Semiramis also had purgatory, which they taught and believed, and adhered to.
The worship of Mary as the Queen of Heaven and the 40 days of Lent for her Son, has no basis in Scripture but rather developed from the pagan celebration of Semiramis’s mourning for forty days over the death of Tammuz before his alleged resurrection—another of Satan’s mythical counterfeits.
The majority of those who call themselves Christians in our world today follow a way of worship that would have offended the apostles and early saints. What do I mean?
The statues of Mary, calling her the Queen of Heaven, the images of Christ and saints; and all of them being revered with candles and incense burning before them are idolatrous. God through His Word calls each of us to always be on guard and to:

DISCIPLESHIP IS EXPLAINING WHAT GOD HAS SAID
Discipleship is all about explaining what God’s Word says about God’s desires for our lives as believers. Every generation needs those who will explain God's Word to the next generation. Not just the facts, but also the application. As the Great Commission puts it: “teaching them to observe all things”.
I have spent an immense amount of my life explaining God’s plan as it has been recorded for us in God’s Word. That is what you have joined today, an explanation of what God says. That is why my friend, John MacArthur, once called what he does: “Explanatory Preaching”.
We are in the midst of going through the Basics of discipleship, which always has two parts: 1). Explaining what God designed us to be (this can be called our Position); and then, 2). Explaining how that translates into daily life (they can be called our Practice).
First, we looked at Truth-1: Saved, and saw that disciples are born-again Christians, those terms disciples & born-again are synonymous; and we also saw that normal, First Century believers were baptized after they were saved, as a testimony of obedience to God.
Next, we saw Truth-2: Scripture Fed, with God's Word as the food for our souls, and the map for our lives.
Then we came to Truth-3: Spirit-Filled lives, and are right now in the midst of seeing what God has said it means to live life in step with the Spirit of God.
LIVING LIFE THE WAY GOD DESIGNED IT TO BE LIVED

The Amazing Plan God Designed To Keep Us Filled
As we open to Ephesians 5, think with me what your answer would be if you were sitting across the table from someone in a discipleship session, and they asked you, “Are you living the way God designed you to live?” How would we answer that depends on how much we understand who we are in Christ.
Let me illustrate this profound spiritual truth from scenes we could come across in everyday life.
What you would think if you can upon a huge group of bicyclists along a country road, and they were all walking their bikes? One simple thought should be: Why are they doing that? Walking bikes along a country road would not be using the bikes for what they were designed to be. Bicycles are designed to glide along as they are mounted, not to be pushed.
If those bicyclists were pushing their bikes because they all had flat tires, they just need to get their flats fixed. Looking at each bike we could see the tire repair kit attached to their bicycle, but unused. Continuing to walk and push a flat tire is not the best plan, the best plan is to pull over, repair the tire, and get on the way.
That sight of pushing a bike that has a fixable flat would be a perfect illustration of what goes on so often in the Church Christ purchased.

What’s coming next? What are the signs? That’s the signs of the times you’ve always heard of. What Jesus does in Matthew 24, He is pulling in everything that had been previously written in the prophets. What Jesus does is, He actually, instead of giving them signs, He shows them 10 what I call trends.
Now keep reading in verse 8 and that’s the next slide. It says this in Matthew 24:8, “All of these are the beginnings of sorrows.” That word is sorrows in my Bible, yours might say birth pangs. Literally, it’s talking about the onset of the contractions that preceded the birth of a baby. That’s the word Jesus used. All of these are just the beginning of the contractions.
And verse 33 says “so you also, when you see all these things…” See what things? See these trends. By the way, I identify from all of these Old Testament passages, 10 trends that the Bible says would become like birth pangs. What are birth pangs?
Look at this, the end of the world trends has three characteristics.
Greater frequency,
Greater intensity and
Greater visibility.
In other words, more people are going to see them. They’re going to get stronger and are going to get closer together. Jesus affirmed in His sermon in Matthew 24, that everything that the Old Testament prophets said was going to happen, are going to start happening before our eyes.

Jesus explained world events would be tied to Jerusalem in Matthew 24, where Jesus also saw a Jewish Temple rebuilt and part of the Tribulation events.
So for this to Temple to be built (that Paul, John, and Daniel also saw prophetically, with Christ), something must happen during the “times of the Gentiles” (Luke 21:24). That may be what we are seeing happening all around us in the world events touching upon the Nation of Israel.
Are we Living for Heaven Today?
As He taught on the End of Days, Jesus revealed that all of the magnificent buildings of Herod would become rubble. . . and that nothing on earth ever lasts; but Jesus came to His disciples with an offer of something they could become a part of that never ends.
Open to Luke 21:36 with me to see Christ's application on prophecy, this is before we even look at our study tonight.
“Watch therefore, and pray always…” (Luke 21:36)
Pray is the word for beg, implore and beseech, it is an intense word! It was used after the chapter filled with prophecy and end times. Jesus was asking us:
What are you intensely asking (begging) God to be doing through your life that will last forever? That is what should most be on our hearts as we study a prophecy. Not whether our view is perfect and every detail is what will happen, it is whether we are living for what really matters!
One of our challenges as students of the Bible is to study & search the Scriptures, seek to come to Biblical conclusions, and then wait.
We are called to do what the Lord left us to do, and not to spend all of our time speculating about what every possible news event has to do with the prophecies.
God is watching over His Word, He will perform it, and we are to be found faithfully doing what He left us to do!
Turn with me to Psalm 83. Tonight we start with the Confederacy of Hate, a group of nations that seek Israel, but that never existed contemporaneously, ever in history. Yet God's Word says they together seek to destroy Israel and end up like whirling dust.

Revelation 2-3 reveals what Christ said to the seven churches, a select group representing all early believers. His message to them speaks across the centuries to us today.
Seven Messages, Seven Applications:
But Only One Acceptable Response
Each church has a distinct message that resonated with those who first heard these words, and with us today.
• Ephesus, the careless church, left their first love. Christ said to them and us, “Come back to Me!”
• Smyrna, the crowned church, suffered persecution. Christ said to them and us, “Be faithful to the end!”
• Pergamos, the compromising church, tolerated evil. Christ said to them and us, “Separate yourselves!”
• Thyatira, the corrupted church, joined the world. Christ said to them and us, “Un-Friend the world!”
• Sardis, the feeble church, wasn’t on guard. Christ said to them and us, “Wake up before it is too late!”
• Philadelphia, the faithful church, was pleasing to God. Christ said to them and us, “Keep on keeping on!”
• Laodicea, the foolish church, needed nothing. Christ said to them and us, “Watch out, you’re making me sick; and I will vomit you out of my mouth unless you repent and see that you need Me!”
Jesus reports that what is needed is for them to repent of their apathy in seeking Him; and start whatever it took to get restored.
What exactly is Jesus pointing at in their lives when He issues this “Vomit Alert” to them? If we unpack this passage word-by-word, we can conclude that there are:
Seven Bad Habits of Believers
That Sicken Christ
v. 14 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works” Jesus said.
They had cultivated some very bad habits. Habits that made them unacceptable to Christ, and even worse, sickening to Him. What patterns in the life of a believer sickens Christ to the point of vomiting? Here are the seven Jesus notes:

What pushes out your hunger for experiencing the intimacy of fellowship with the Lord in your life?
Do you seek food first? Entertainment first? The latest news first? The status of your investments first? The web and your computer first? The television, radio, music first? Your collections, investments, shopping first? Your sports, bodybuilding, and health needs first?
All of these are alone good and worthy of time but not at God's expense, He is to be sought first and deepest of all!
Biblical Fasting uncovers and exposes whatever it is that has mastered our lives in place of Christ.
1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
The more we experience intimacy in fellowship with Jesus Christ the more we hunger for Him, and the greater our longings become to be with Him in Heaven. Then we see our focus in our lives begin to change, the more we long for our Great God and Savior:
The Greater becomes our Looking for our Bridegroom's Return from Heaven
The Greater our Hating any beachhead of sin in our lives,
The Greater becomes our Investing our time in Christ's Body, His Church,
The Greater becomes our seeking the Evangelizing of Lost People around the World,
The Greater our Sensing of Satan's Lies in the Media and Culture of this World,
The Greater becomes our Asking for God's Kingdom to Come on Earth,
The Greater becomes our Walking each day Pleasing God,
The Greater becomes our desire to be filled with the Knowledge of God's Will
And on and on it goes into our lives. Actually, anything less than this growing surrender to the Lord through spiritual hungering and thirsting after God, means that our appetite has been ruined through all the little things that have filled us up. It means we have neglected the greatest food - Our Father and His Kingdom for the lesser food of His gifts in life. That spells spiritual famine, weakness, and failure.

Have you ever asked yourself: What qualifies in God’s eyes as an affliction? Do you know how to find an answer to such questions? Simply trace a topic as it unfolds in the Scriptures from its first occurrence onward.
For example, to find where “affliction” occurs in the Scriptures, you can look the word up in a Bible study tool such as Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible and then read each reference in your Bible, along with any surrounding verses that affect its context.
When I did this with the word “affliction,” I found thirty-seven occurrences in the Old Testament, and takes at least seven forms, as follows. (Emphasis added to the verses below.)
• In Genesis 16 God says, that ill-treatment by others qualifies as an affliction.
• In Genesis 29 God says a lack of love qualifies as an affliction.
• In Genesis 31 God says, that lost wages and broken promises qualify as an affliction.
• In Genesis 41 God says, hatred, jealousy, and betrayal qualify as an affliction.
• In Exodus 3 God says, that underpayment and overwork qualify as an affliction.
• In I Samuel 1 God says, that the inability to have children qualifies as an affliction.
• In II Samuel 16 God says, unkind words, slander, accusations, and insults qualify as an affliction.
If you are struggling emotionally or physically right now, stop and reflect upon the lives of these Old Testament saints and what they faced: hatred, jealousy, and betrayal; a bad job situation; family disharmony; infertility; verbal insults, accusations, and unkind words.
Now look with me at each of these situations God gives us as lessons, and by His grace, let’s learn a lesson from each.
1. Ill treatment by others qualifies as an affliction: … The Angel of the LORD said to [Hagar]: “Behold, you are with child, and you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael because the LORD has heard your affliction” (Genesis 16:11).
In God’s sight, being ill-treated by jealous and vengeful bosses is an affliction. Hagar’s boss—her mistress, Abram’s wife Sarai—was jealous when Hagar became with child of Abram, and Sarai held Hagar in contempt. But God said, “I am the God who sees your affliction, Hagar, and it is not right for Sarai to mistreat you this way, so I will bless you.”
If you are mistreated by someone who has authority over you and it is making life hard at home, at work, or at school, God says, “I want you to learn from Me in that situation; I know about it and will work well for you through it.” (See Romans 8:28.)

BEWARE OF BITTERNESS: IT RUINS THE KIND, TENDERHEARTED & FORGIVING LIFE
There are many infections of the soul that are caused by sin.
One of the more powerful infections is called bitterness.
Bitterness slowly infects a person’s life systemically. Every part of their life becomes defiled (Heb. 12:15), their joys get soured, their hopes get dimmed, and their spiritual life gets distant.
Beware of allowing bitterness to destroy your life.
One of the struggles believers have always faced while seeking to follow the Lord is bitterness.
The key passage in the New Testament that warns about bitterness is Ephesians 4:30.
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. NKJV
The immeasurable power of God is stopped when His people disobey. God’s grace teaches us to deny ungodliness, but when we resist that grace our sin grieves and quenches the Holy Spirit .
Bitterness is a very deadly, fast-growing, and easily spread form of spiritual cancer.
In the New Testament each time the word bitterness is used it always is a form of the Greek word pic. This word means just what the tool by the similar sounding word comes from, “to prick or cut”. This Greek word used for bitterness implies something that pricks or punctures and penetrates deeply.
This verse is fascinating for two reasons:
First, bitterness is the very first sin that is listed after Paul warns about the horrible dangers of grieving the Holy Spirit of God as a believer. Bitterness is FIRST in that list, never forget that.
Second, the verse on the other side of the warning (v. 29) is all about corrupt words (one of the danger signs of a bitter person is that they say rotten things about others).
Beware also of one of the chief causes of bitterness, which is an unforgiving heart.
