Does advancing the spoke shave blade close the mouth?
I love it when my kid asks a question. Especially about woodworking!
He asks the questions that my students are often afraid to ask. They're also the questions I often don't think to ask myself. And in answering them, I get a chance to examine my own thinking about how things work.
Curious students are always welcome in my shop. They make me a better teacher.
If you're curious about becoming a student, take a look at my classes...
One of the unique features of the Plate 11 Pin-Head Shave Horse is the "Pin-Head" that inspired it's name. The idea for this rolling pin-like (it's not totally round) addition to the clamping surface came from Bern Chandley, who was gracious enough to allow me to include it the design.
The pin creates a wide clamping surface that pivots to match the profile of your parts regardless of their shape.
But we found that the clamping pin would roll freely as we slid parts in and out. Finding the flat clamping surface became a game of chance.
The limiting pin allows the clamping pin to pivot without rolling.
In this video I'll split an oversized piece of stock to find the straightest grain, run the blank through a dowel plate and glue it, along with some grippy suede, to the clamping pin.

We hit some pretty amazing milestones last week.
My Assistant Den Leader, Jason, and I had the honor of awarding an amazing group of scouts the Arrow of Light.
We've been guiding some of these kids through Cub Scouts since Kindergarten. It was a bit overwhelming to see all that hard work pay off.
I can't wait to see the positive impact these kids will contintue to make on the world around them.
---
I also had the privilege of spending the week my latest student, Adam, as he built his first Berea Ladderback Chair.
Adam built a beautiful Walnut Arm Chair while I took a moment here and there to add some finish to the seat this newly completed Cherry Arm Chair.

Would you like to make a chair with me?
In an In-Person Class, you'll bring a handful of tools to my shop and take home a chair at the end of the week.
If you can't travel for class, or would rather make a chair at home, I'll be starting another remote session near the end of the summer. With just a few hours of work each week, you'll be sitting in a brand new chair by Thanksgiving!
Send me a message and we'll set up a call to answer all your questions.
---
Would you like me to make a chair for you?
I'm currently taking a small number of chair commissions.
Send me a message and let me know what you'd like.

In this week's video I'll cover everything you need to know about wrapping your chair with a Tapered Warp, the first half of weaving this beautiful seat.

One of the great things about remote classes is the ability to share more than one way to accomplish each step.
We'd never have time to cover them all in a live class. But with pre-recorded demonstrations, the student can pick a method based on the tools they have on hand.
And as the instructor, I can add new information, new methods, without taking the other options away from my current students.
In this video, I've spliced together demonstration of the 3 different methods I recommend using to drill a clean mortise in the end grain of a part.
1 - Use a drill press and a simple jig.
2 - Use a Lathe with a Jacobs chuck and a large tool rest - Spin the bit, not the part
2 - Use a lathe with both a Jacobs chuck and a jaw chuck - Spin the part, not the bit
