Building my off grid Winter Shelter Shack aka "The Meth Lab"
I decided to build a simple Winter Shelter on my off grid property. Using the the KISS method (my preferred method for approaching most tasks) I spent a few days over two visits cobbling together a shelter.
Thanks to some interesting weather shifts the original idea morphed several times into something that eventually resembled a meth lab in the woods. Fortunately the only thing I'll be "cooking" in the lab will be large chunks of meat.
As you will notice I have some issues with the camera towards the end which I believe was caused by -8 degree temperature... good times.
Part 1 - Scribing and Notching
Part 2 - Chainsaw work on lateral and saddle notches
Well the foundation and floor is done, now begins the laborious task of building walls. So you want to scribe fit your logs?... in this two part video I'll show you how I am using the scribe-fit technique to build my off grid log cabin.
The basic method of building scribe-fit log walls has remained unchanged for centuries. One log at a time, a log is placed on top of another and then using a Scribe (divider with bubble levels), carefully run the tool along the bottom log which transfers it's unique contours onto the log above.
I should add that this is definitely NOT the fastest way for one man to build a house. If you are in a hurry to get a roof over your head, as I am before the snow starts to fly, you may want to consider a different log building method. I do believe that scribe fitting offers a better look , tightest fit and best insulation value of all the hand-crafted styles.

Here I am at the end of my work day... my last work day of 2016! In this video I share a couple brain farts about waiting around for opportunities and wasted time spent commuting to work every day.
Thanks to all my subscribers - HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As someone who eats, sleeps and actually lives off grid, I am always looking for new ways to survive and thrive outdoors. I own solar generators, solar panels and have owned the Waterlily water turbine for several months. This portable water turbine can charge all kinds of gear like, cell phones, USB battery banks, camp lights, speakers, cameras, lead acid batteries and portable power stations.
As I mention in the video there are three areas in nature that one can generate power from, water, wind and sun and the Waterlily water turbine can create electrical power from both water and wind, that's a WIN WIN in my books.
Waterlily Specs:
Maximum Power 15W
USB Output: 5V regulated, up to 3A
12V Output: 14.6V DC, up to 2A
Weight and Dimensions:
2.85 lb (1.3 kg)
7" diameter × 3" thick (180mm × 76mm)
Water Flow Speed:
Minimum flow required: 0.7 mph (1 km/h, 0.5 kt)
Flow for peak power output (15 W): 7.2 mph (11.5 km/h, 6 kt)
Maximum water speed: 9 mph (15 km/h, 8 kt)
Your WaterLily box includes:
WaterLily Turbine
12' (3.5 m) Paracord
Stainless steel carabiner
Rope tensioner
4 300mm Stainless steel lanyards

Review: OneTigris Hammock Underquilt
For years I have considered purchasing an underquilt for my Hennessy hammock camping expeditions but they just seemed so ridiculously priced. I've been using my trusty lightweight Thermarest sleeping pad in my Hennessy for a couple years now and have been quite satisfied. Recently I stumbled upon the OneTigris underquilt as a possible alternative to my Theremarest. Most importantly the OneTigris hammock underquilt is affrodable... needless to say I decided to give it a try.

Greetings and Salutations.
Lets assume you have absolutely nothing to do for the next 20 minutes... you should watch this video then.
Clearly I enjoy punishing myself. A great way to do this is to take a mountain bicycle for a walk up a mountain... you could take your dog but riding your dog downhill may not be as fun.
All the best to everyone!

Never a dull day... well sometimes. I was recently lucky enough to extinguish a chimney fire before I left my cabin for the day.
Chimney fires are caused by the build up of creosote inside the chimney. Creosote is highly combustible and if enough of it builds up it can ignite at high temperatures. Essentially you have to starve the fire of oxygen, batten everything down... or in my case blast dry powder into the burn box and pray.
Dry powder is messy. It took several days for me to clean things up in the cabin.
Lesson learned.

So you want to live off Grid. I decided to just have some fun with this one. Have you ever noticed all the half naked or women in yoga pants thumbnails you get when you search online for "living off grid" video's. I cant imagine whoring my significant other as clickbait.
I do not claim ownership of the thumbnail used.

I hate to admit it but yes I lost my Sig Sauer P320 on a snow covered mountain, fortunately for just 3 weeks.
My chest holster is a molle holster, permanently attached to my vest, it has two different safety's that are always engaged... especially when I am scrambling up a snowy mountain. I also religiously check every 10 or so minutes when I am moving through snowy woods. This said, SOMEHOW the pistol managed to slide out of the holster... I'm guessing a combination of me slipping/flaling at times and snow getting on chest rig (possibly allowing firearm dislodge/slide out from holster)
I decided to purchase metal detector to help with the P320 rescue, I went with a lower end metal detector, the Bounty Hunter Land Ranger Pro. This metal detector did a great job, without it I would not of found my pistol.
I am happy to say that the Sig Sauer held up well, besides a little surface rust which I was able to clean up, she is firing just fine... like nothing happened.

#backcountry #backpacking #camping
I am a huge believer in less is more. I try to apply this way of thinking to every aspect of my life. The mere thought of rolling into a camp site in an RV or Camper with all the toys makes me feel a little queasy.
Every now and then I just like to throw my pack on and disappear into the woods, follow a deer trail, river or mountain creek, spur of the moment planning. I do this often and most of the time I do not film a thing... I find filming a distraction.
When planning a video trip I typically bring along extra camera batteries... not on this one. On this trip I woke to a dead camera battery so apologies for the abrupt end.
I go to the woods to center myself, for purpose and to put as much distance between myself and modern conveniences.
Thanks for watching.
