The argument goes like this: Billionaires deserve their billions, because the products they have created have added trillions of dollars of value to the world. Their customers have benefited ten-fold, or hundred-fold by purchasing the product or service. Consequently, the billionaires reward is relatively tiny compared to the amount of value they have added, and therefore, their reward is justified. Take Microsoft founder, Bill Gates. He made his billions off designing and selling the Windows operating system. His reward of mansions, private jets, classic car collections, and ranches, is relatively small in comparison. He’s added tens of trillions of dollars of value to the world, therefore, he deserves the title of second-richest man. Argument over, right? Well, I wouldn’t go that far. Although you could superficially justify the argument, I think there are many things that have failed to be mentioned. Firstly, customers of Microsoft do not immediately benefit from owning Windows (or Office, or any other piece of Microsoft software/hardware). The very action of owning or purchasing Windows does not add value to your life. It’s what you do with that software. Secondly, Bill Gates wasn’t the only person involved in creating Windows. There must have been a whole bunch of programmers, managers, and marketing directors. Are they all billionaires, too? Without the programmers, Windows would never have existed. Without the marketers, the product would never have been sold and distributed. Everyone in the chain had some integral part to play in producing the cash cow that is Windows. Why then, did only three of them deserve to become billionaires? Thirdly, Bill Gates didn’t just create Windows from thin air. In order for him to create any software, he needed computers, electricity, an education, a business-friendly environment, and so on. Without any of these things, Microsoft would never have existed. If Bill Gate’s customers have benefited trillions of dollars from his software, then so too as he from the computer company that made his computer, or the government that constructed and maintains the electrical grid. The difference is, Bill Gates has billions of dollars and a ridiculous mansion, whereas most of us who use his products do not. Yes, Bill Gates is smart. Yes, he is business-savvy. Laura Tingle is the Staff Elected Director at the ABC, chief political correspondent for 7.30, as well as the president of the National Press Club of Australia. Ms Tingle holds a privileged, taxpayer-funded position as a senior journalist at the national broadcaster, whose charter mandates impartiality and balance. But Ms Tingle’s most recent rant, funded by you, was at the Sydney Writers’ Festival over the weekend. When discussing the Coalition’s immigration policy where basically Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has promised to slow down immigration temporarily in order to free up housing during a housing crisis – a fairly moderate proposal I would suggest – well, Ms Tingle unleashed, saying, “For a major political leader to be saying everything that’s going wrong in this country is because of migrants, and I had this sudden flash of people turning up to try to rent a property or at an auction and if they look different, whatever you define different as, basically he has given them licence to be abused. We are a racist country, let’s face it. We always have been, and it’s very depressing.” Is Ms Tingle right? Is Australia a racist country? For those of you who are impatient, my short answer is No. We’re one of the least racist countries on this planet. Let me explain. This is the National People’s Congress in China. What percentage do you think, how many foreign faces are there in leadership positions in China? What about the Indian Parliament? Or how about Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria? How many non-African people do you think hold leadership positions? Noting that these three countries represent more than a third of the world’s population. How many foreign university lecturers do you think you can see in these countries? How many foreign doctors, dentists, lead actors on television, people manning petrol stations? How many Aussie sandwich shops do you think there are? The answer to all these questions is not 0%, but it’s close to 0%. Actually, I think Ms Tingle is completely wrong. Australia is not racist. Australia is actually very accommodating, we’re very accepting, we’re tolerant, we’re egalitarian – we demand that all people are given the same opportunities and are treated fairly. Look, I’m not saying it’s perfect, but tell me any other country that is. The Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum failed not because of racism, but because it was inherently unfair. Aussies don’t like the idea of giving one group of people more privilege than the rest of us. Yes, the voice was only a so-called “advisory” body, but it would have given one group of Australians a political advantage, even if it was only slight, over other Australians, which is just not fair. To be fair to Aussies, we would be equally dismissive if say Americans living in Australia demanded exemption from land tax. Of course Aussies would reply, “Piss off, mate!”. This isn’t about race. This is about fairness. This is about Australia maintaining our egalitarian values. Probably around 80% of my social circle are foreign-born. All of them prefer living in Australia to their home countries. Why? Because they are given every opportunity in Australia. That’s very liberating for most people. My wife, who is Chinese, was basically given a free TAFE course to train up in a job that is facing shortages. She now works for the Government and has endless work if she wants it. In Australia, anyone who’s willing to put in a little bit of effort can get a job. The only thing holding people back in Australia is an unwillingness to work, or an unwillingness to better oneself. As I said, this is not me saying Australia is perfect, but racism is not the issue. Calling Australia racist, is like calling the pope a Buddhist. Remember those countries I mentioned earlier, well according to CNN, “Nigeria’s paramilitary raids birthday party, arrests 76 gay people”. The Guardian, “Elderly Uyghur women imprisoned in China for decades-old religious ‘crimes’”, and one from India, “As ethnic violence rages on in Manipur, Indian government accused of looking the other way”. Don’t get me wrong, I like Japan – I lived there for many years – but even in modern-day, democratic Japan, you can still find signs forbidding foreigners from entering. To be fair, I wasn’t even upset by this. I just moved on to the next bar. Oh yes, but according to the ABC’s Laura Tingle, Australia is the racist country, the one that welcomes people from all over the world to live and work here in relative peace and prosperity. The ABC used to be a means to report to regional Australia, but with today’s technology, that is no longer a requirement. In my opinion, we should give the ABC twelve months to set itself up as a paid subscription service, selling off any unused assets. No taxpayer funding will be required. Australian pet products supplier, Petstock, has become the next in a growing line of companies to boycott Australia Day. Perhaps there was a time when you could purchase an Australian Flag dog coat for your spaniel, or a bandanna for your terrier, but those days are numbered. It should be noted that supermarket giant Woolworths has recently acquired a 55% stake in Petstock Group, obviously using their power to push their anti-Australia Day agenda. Interestingly, I went to their website, and discovered something a bit strange. If you search for “collar”, of course you get a wide range of cat and dog collars as expected. But, if you search for “Australia”, this is no joke, you get an error message – “Something went wrong”. I don’t know if this is intentional, or just some kind of bug, but it’s amusing nonetheless. In a statement from Petstock, the head parakeet said, “At the Petstock Group, we remain committed to being an inclusive organisation. It is at the heart of our mantra of People, Pets, Planet, that we show respect and make sure everyone who comes through our physical or digital doors feel like they belong.” Except if you celebrate Australia Day, then you can bugger off! When asked about these controversies, head parakeet, I mean Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese simply said, “I think we need to stop looking for areas in which we can be outraged – we need to come together.” That’s funny coming from him. In the first year-and-a-half of his term as PM, he lead the charge in dividing Australians with the massive, cash-wasting, Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum. That ended up being very unifying, didn’t it? Cricket Australia Chief Executive Nick Hockley also is banning all references to Australia Day in the upcoming test match that will be played over Australia Day. He said, “We’re not in any way boycotting Australia Day… We’re just mindful that in our communication materials, it means different things to different people, and we’re respectful, and we just want everyone to feel welcome.” Australian Cricket Captain Pat Cummins has weighed in on the issue and stated, “I think we should have an Australia Day, but I think we can probably find a more appropriate day to celebrate it.” Ah yes. Just change the date! That will fix everything, won’t it? Do they think we’re stupid? No matter what date Australia Day is ever held, these activists will never come together to celebrate Australia. They hate what Australia stands for. They want Australia Day, and perhaps Australia, abolished. Although not all Labor politicians agree. Chris Minns, Premier of New South Wales, stated, “This is a day for us all to celebrate with your family and friends, and recognise that we live in the greatest country on Earth. I definitely will be doing that. Cricket Australia should revisit the decision. The idea that you would take a national day away from any country, particularly Australia, is a strange one. We should right now be trying to pull each other together, and this is the day that we’ve set aside to celebrate what it means to live in the greatest country on Earth.” Queensland Premier Steven Miles was a bit less enthusiastic. When asked about the Australia Day cricket controversy, he said, “I haven’t given that much thought… I suppose the Boxing Day Test starts on Boxing Day, whereas this Test will start the day before Australia Day. That might be their explanation, but you’d really have to talk to Cricket Australia.” He’s right. He hasn’t given it much thought. He’s trying to insinuate the reason for not mentioning Australia Day during the Australia Day Test match is that the five-day match doesn’t actually start on Australia Day. What a whole lot of rubbish! Some people are using the analogy that insisting on celebrating Australia Day against the wishes of a minority, is akin to not installing enough disability ramps and lifts for the relatively small proportion of people who are wheelchair-bound. I think that’s a really poor analogy. Cancelling Australia Day because a few people are upset by it, is more akin to removing all steps and stairwells because wheelchair-bound people are upset by watching able-bodied people use them. Furthermore, wheel-chair bound people are not going around rubbishing or attacking their own country, as per the anti-Australia Day fanatics. An online poll by the Courier Mail asked the question, “Should Cricket Australia be snubbing Australia Day?” An overwhelming number of respondents, 97%, said No. Cricket Australia, of course, should continue to recognise Australia Day, and stop playing this stupid, woke game. It just goes on. These people are just not listening to the majority of Australians and are set on their crusade to tear down Australian traditions. Here’s a list of the top 10 highest-paid CEOs in Australia for 2018. All of them got paid over $10 million with Qantas Airways boss Alan Joyce topping the list at a massive $23.876 million dollars. According to ABS data, the average Australian full-time wage for 2018 was $86,736. That means Mr Joyce’s salary is about 275 times larger than the average full-time worker. But this “average” is a little bit misleading. The Australian Government like to quote this figure as it makes Australians look a lot richer than they actually are. It helps them promote their “tax cuts for middle Australia” rhetoric. But obviously, not every worker in Australia works full-time. According to the ABS, the average worker, full-time or otherwise, receives about $64,391 per year. So Mr Joyce’s salary is now about 371 times higher than the “average” salary.
