This is a demonstration of an attempt to bring screen reading to Classic99, a TI-99/4A emulator. This uses the Microsoft SAPI to read the screen, and in a 'continuous' mode, will read only new words as they are detected on the screen. Note that although the TI is well known for having a speech synthesizer, this is an emulation feature using modern speech synthesis, not an attempt to cram it into the original architecture. The approach is fairly flexible and can handle most screen modes (multicolor and bitmap are excluded). It will attempt to exclude graphics characters but it doesn't OCR the letters, so sometimes it can't tell. (In this sample, I abort the speech on the scrolling receipt scene to avoid a minute or so of reading out individual letters). It does detect and will block solid characters, as well as groups or 3 or more in a row. The continuous mode uses the Meyer diff algorithm to find new words, even if the screen has scrolled in strange ways. The Scott Adam's Adventure games near the end are the torture test for this with a split screen and downwards scrolling, but it does a passable job. In events where context is lost, a keypress can always read the entire screen. I think the concept shows merit, and potentially the code is adaptable to other emulators. I don't think I've seen anyone else try it, at least! ;)
