Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has denounced the NYPD's new crime-fighting robot dog, appearing to accuse the department of racism for deploying the device for testing in only low-income communities of color.
The Democratic firebrand blasted the police department's four-legged 'Digidog' in a succession of Thursday tweets, two days after the cyber hound was filmed responding to a home invasion in her home borough of the Bronx.
'Shout out to everyone who fought against community advocates who demanded these resources go to investments like school counseling instead,' she wrote.
'Now robotic surveillance ground drones are being deployed for testing on low-income communities of color with under-resourced schools.'
Ocasio-Cortez then argued that police funding that allows for new technology like the Digidog would have better served the community if it had been allotted to programs for education or housing.
'Please ask yourself: when was the last time you saw next-generation, world class technology for education, healthcare, housing, etc consistently prioritized for underserved communities like this?' she added in a follow-up tweet.
Digidog, which was designed by Boston Dynamics and has a starting price of around $75,000, joined the NYPD last year.
The blue and black rover, which weighs approximately 70 pounds, is equipped with lights, two-way communication, and video cameras, the department said.
The robot is fitted with cameras to search an area and send back real-time footage and is powered by artificial intelligence to navigate on its own.
The cyber canine can also climb stairs, see in the dark, and run at about three-and-a-half miles an hour. It was designed for emergency situations that would otherwise be too dangerous for human officers.
Digidog is currently being tested by the NYPD's Technical Assistance Response Unit, which deployed it at a home invasion and barricade situation on East 227th Street near White Plains Road in Wakefield on Tuesday.
Two men were reportedly being held hostage in a Bronx apartment. They had been threatened at gun point, tied up and tortured for hours by two male assailants who pretended to be plumbers to gain access to the home.
One of the victims managed to escape and called the police.
Digidog was deployed and helped officers determine that the armed suspects were no longer inside the home.
The police said they were still searching for the two men, who stole a cellphone and $2,000 in cash and used a hot iron to burn one of the victims.
Digidog was also previously deployed in Brooklyn in October to help find a gunman hiding in a basement, and was also used in a hostage situation in Queens the following month.

Walker made his case to members of the Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties who met via Zoom on Wednesday to discuss House Resolution 40, which aims to 'establish a commission to study and consider a national apology and proposal for reparations for the institution of slavery'.

Walker went on to rant about the impracticality of reparations, given that slavery was abolished so long ago.
'How many African-Americans was alive today that was in slavery? Which is none,' he said.
'So I go to some of the older people for experience and I remember my mom mentioning, how could we pay for your great, great, great grandfather being burned to death? Or how could we pay for your great, great uncle being hung?'
'I understand that those pictures are horrible,' Walker said, referencing photos of a beaten slave and lynched black Americans that HR 40's sponsor, Rep Sheila Jackson Lee (D - Texas), presented at the start of the hearing.
'But right now, I think the fact finding is going to be very difficult to go back over history when history is not even taught in school on what we're trying to in fact find.'
He continued: 'Where would the money from from? Does it come from all the other races except the black taxpayers?

President Joe Biden called communism a 'failed system' on Thursday after he faced criticism from conservatives and some Florida Democrats for not showing strong enough support for the protesters in Cuba.
'Communism is a failed system, universally fail system. And I don't see socialism as a very useful substitute,' Biden said at the White House during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The White House had given a more measured response to the protests that took place over food shortages and power outages on the island nation, refusing to call out the 'communist' government but denounced the 'authoritative regime' instead.
Biden said there were a 'number of things' his administration could to help the Cuban people but he expressed concern the communist-led government would take control of any aid sent there, such as remittances or COVID vaccines.
'They've cut off access to the internet. We're considering whether we have the technology to reinstate that access.'
The widespread internet blackouts are believed to have been sparked by the government during the crackdown on protesters in the streets of Cuba.
He also acknowledged his administration is doing something about the lack of internet access in Cuba. Florida's Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote Biden on Wednesday, asking him to do something about the problem.
'We're considering whether we had the technological ability to reinstate that access,' Biden said.
Cuba is suffering its worst crisis in years from a combination of the coronavirus pandemic that has paralyzed its economy, including the vital tourism industry, inefficiencies in the state-run economy and the tightening of U.S. sanctions on the island.
The country has been governed by the Communist Party for some six decades.
DeSantis, who is seen as a top contender for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024 should he run, asked Biden for federal assistance to provide Internet access to the people of Cuba.
In his letter to Biden, DeSantis noted: 'The Cuban people have lost their ability to communicate with one another, and many Floridians born in Cuba have no information on the safety of their loved ones. Equally as important, the world has also lost the ability to see what is happening on the ground as the Cuban people rise in support of freedom.'
He called on Biden to provide the necessary authorizations and funding to help boost Internet access on the island.
He also denounced the 'communist government' of Cuba at a Thursday press conference in Miami.
'We obviously have to stand with the people of Cuba against the communist dictatorship,' DeSantis said.
At his press conference, the Florida governor reiterated his call to allow for internet access.

Derek Chauvin was found guilty Tuesday on all charges. As a result, the former Minneapolis police officer faces up to 75 years in prison, though the sentence could be significantly less. Most experts predict the high-end of the sentence to be closer to 40 years.
Chauvin was found guilty on two counts of murder—second-degree unintentional murder and third-degree murder. According to sentencing guidelines, he likely faces at least 12.5 years on those charges since he has no criminal history. But maximum sentences for each charge differs.
Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 40 years; third-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 25 years; and an additional second-degree manslaughter is punishable by up to 10 years. He would most likely be sentenced to four years for the manslaughter charge, according to state guidelines.
In addition, the judge has the option to rule that the sentences be served concurrently, or at the same time, meaning that the longest sentence is the active one, or consecutively. However, it is unlikely that Chavin will be sentenced to serve consecutive sentences.
The state also sought a lengthier sentence prior to the verdict, citing aggravating factors. State filings showed these factors included Floyd's death happening in the presence of children; Floyd being treated with "particular cruelty"; and, as a police officer, Chauvin "abused his position of authority."
Sentencing is expected to come in eight weeks. First, a pre-sentencing report about Chauvin's background must be produced. Then, Judge Peter A. Cahill will have to determine if there were special circumstances related to the crime that would justify a higher sentence than the prison terms laid out by Minnesota's sentencing guidelines.
Chauvin, who was seen on video pressing his knee to George Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes as Floyd pleaded that he could not breathe, has been out on bail since last fall. Following the reading of the verdict, Judge Cahill revoked Chauvin's bail, and he will remain in custody until sentencing.

Anonymous insiders at Telepictures said the longtime host of her eponymous talk show is ready to hang up her microphone in the wake of recent allegations about “toxic” workplace conditions.
A source at Telepictures told DailyMail.com that the host is telling executives at Telepictures and Warner Bros that she has had enough and wants to walk away from the show.
“She feels she can’t go on and the only way to recover her personal brand from this is to shut down the show,” an insider told the outlet on Friday. “The truth is she knew what was going on — it’s her show. The mayor of Portland, Ore., asked residents for help Friday in putting an end to violent protests that have erupted in recent weeks — and periodically since last summer — and urged the public to stand together and “take the city back.”
“They want to burn, they want to bash, they want to intimidate, they want to assault,” Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) said Friday after announcing that the city would extend its state of emergency through Monday after a string of demonstrations that have resulted in several businesses being vandalized and public buildings defaced.
“Our job is to unmask them, arrest them and prosecute them,” he said, asking the public to contact the police and provide them with information about the rioters, write down their license plate numbers or film them when they commit acts of vandalism.
Wheeler asked for residents’ cooperation, which he underlined should be nonconfrontational, ahead of a march planned for Friday night that was announced on social media as an “autonomous demonstration.”
The march began around 9 p.m. in northwest Portland, with around 75 people mostly dressed in black, and was declared a riot by the police soon after protesters began blocking streets, breaking windows of a Starbucks and writing graffiti on a restaurant and a bus shelter, according to a police statement.
A small group of participants also pushed their way into a restaurant.
Officers arrested two people, both 29, and charged them with criminal mischief in the first degree.
The police said they had found a flier with the instructions: “bloc up, be water, no megaphones, no streamers.” Such words had been included on fliers on previous nights when people “armed with weapons used to cause damage, wearing helmets, body armor, and gas masks” had committed “crimes such as criminal mischief, arson and assault,” the police said in a statement before the march.
The fact that the flier discouraged live-streaming led the police to think the participants intended to commit crimes and wanted to avoid video evidence that could be used to identify and arrest them, the statement added.
Ahead of the march, Wheeler also instructed police to intervene and stop “the self-described anarchist mob” from engaging in “criminal destruction” as he underscored the need for the community to stand together.
“Our community needs to resume their lives, people need to go back to work, employers need to be able to reopen,” Wheeler said, adding that he supported “all police tactics” needed, including the controversial “kettling” maneuver, which is to surround, box in and contain a crowd by blocking off exit points and then making arrests.

Lindsey Graham has begged Joe Biden to call off a second impeachment, insisting that Donald Trump should be given credit for having made a 'helpful' statement, and pleading with Biden that impeachment 'will destroy the country even further.'
The South Carolina senator appeared on Sean Hannity's Fox News show on Friday night, hours after the articles of impeachment were unveiled.
House Democrats are planning to impeach Trump with a single impeachment article charging him with 'incitement of insurrection'.
The move is on a hyper-fast track after Wednesday's Capitol riot – with the article set to be introduced Monday.
A draft of the article prepared by Reps. David Cicilline, Ted Lieu, and Jamie Raskin states that, 'Incited by Trump, a mob unlawfully breached the Capitol,' injured law enforcement, menaced lawmakers and the vice president, and interfered with the count of the Electoral College.
But Graham, looking shaken, urged Biden to call his colleagues and tell them not to proceed.
'I wanted President Trump to win so badly,' Graham admitted.
'Now, tonight, I am calling on President-elect Biden to pick up the phone and call Nancy Pelosi and the squad to end the second impeachment.

An elite Massachusetts liberal arts college has quietly conceded that there was no truth to allegations of racism made by one of their students that 'ruined the lives' of numerous campus workers.
Oumou Kanoute was in the canteen at Smith College on July 31, 2018 when she claimed she was profiled for 'eating while black' after a security guard asked her what she was doing.
Kanoute, a psychology undergraduate student, posted video of the incident on social media and claimed that she was the victim of racism.
She named staff: one of whom was hospitalized with stress, and another janitor, who was not present, was forced from his job.
Kanoute said the security guard may have been carrying a 'lethal weapon' when, in fact, he was unarmed.
As a result, Smith forced employees to attend seminars about unconscious bias, with one staff member, who disagreed with it, quitting her job.
However, an independent law firm investigating the incident has now found that there was no evidence of wrongdoing and cleared all those involved.
On the day of the incident, Kanoute, a 21-year-old who was raised in New York after her family emigrated from Mali, was in an empty canteen that was reserved for a summer camp program for young children.
The 150-year-old women-only college, whose motto is 'audacity, agency, authenticity,' charges $80,000 a year in fees.
About 6.6 per cent of Smith's more than 2,500 undergraduates identify as black, according to college data: 36.3 per cent identify as a person of color.
Jackie Blair, a veteran cafeteria employee, mentioned to Kanoute that it was reserved for the summer school, and then decided to drop it, according to The New York Times.
A janitor, who was in his 60s and poor of sight, and had worked at Smith for 35 years, was emptying garbage cans when he saw a figure reclining and eating alone, in a far corner of the canteen which was supposed to be closed.
Campus police had advised staff to call security rather than confront strangers on their own, so the janitor called security.
'We have a person sitting there laying down in the living room,' the janitor told a dispatcher according to a transcript.
'I didn't approach her or anything but he seems out of place.'
A well-known older campus security officer drove over to the dorm where the cafeteria was situated, The Times recounted, and was accompanied by a campus police officer.
He recognized her as a student and they had a brief and polite conversation, which she recorded on video.
'Hi,' she says.
'How are you doing?' a man says.
'Good, how are you?' she replied.
'We were wondering why you were here,' he says.

Like many other young Venezuelans, Valery Lopez has found a way to survive the South American country's crippling economic crisis: through online s***** content.

Venezuela has the world's highest inflation levels, it's been in recession for seven years and has regular shortages of basic necessities such as food and medicine.
Lopez's channel has more than 50 subscribers -- mostly foreigners. Each one pays $10 a month: a figure six times the minimum salary in Venezuela, where the currency is constantly depreciating.
It's a point highlighted by psychologist Abel Saraiba, who is also the coordinator of a non-governmental group focusing on the rights of children and teenagers.
"In other countries where there isn't a humanitarian emergency there has been an increase in consumption" on platforms such as OnlyFans, said Sarabia.
"But in our context we can give them an extra dimension ... To what extent would someone adopt such a risky (line of work) if they had other work options?"
