Welcome to Making Monday with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown today I'm going to demonstrate how to make a cold water infusion. Making cold infusions is easy and they are great for making infusions with herbs that are mucilaginous.
Cold water infusions help to keep mucilaginous herbs such as Marshmallow, and Slippery Elm, from getting too slimy.
Cold infusions can also be used when you want to keep the volatile oils in the water such as mint family plants.
They can also be used to keep from dissolving constituents that are not wanted such as safrol in Sassafras root.
To make a cold water infusion, you will need:
Fresh or dried herb
A jar
Some room temperature filtered water
If you are using fresh herbs, you’ll also want a cutting board and knife or ulu.

Welcome to Storytime with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown and I wrote this story to help you learn about herbs.
Today, I'm reading from Issue 17 - Calming Chamomile (June 2010) which you can find here: https://www.herbalrootszine.com/product/june-2010-calming-chamomile/
I’m sure you’ve heard of Chamomile! Peter Rabbit’s mom gave it to him after he got into Mr. McGregor’s garden, ate too much, and came home with a tummy ache!
This beautiful tiny daisy-like flower helps with all kinds of digestive problems including stomach aches, indigestion and nausea. It’s in gripe water, which is a popular medicine given to babies for colic.
Chamomile is great for the nervous system too, helping us to relax when we are a bit stressed out.
If you suffer from nightmares, try drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed to help give you more relaxing sleep to keep the nightmares at bay.
The essential oil of Chamomile is a beautiful blue color! It is often applied to chicken pox blisters to stop itching and help them heal.
A tea of chamomile makes a great eye wash for all sorts of eye issues such as conjunctivitis.
That’s just a few of the many ways we can utilize Chamomile.
Today’s story is “Camomile Toughens Up”.

Welcome to Making Monday with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown today I'm going to demonstrate how to dry and roast Burdock roots. Roasting roots goes one step past drying to make a root that can be decocted into a deliciously rich decoction or combined with chai herbs to make nourishing and warming blends. This works well for roots such as Burdock, Chicory, and Dandelion.
To roast roots, you will need:
Fresh or dried roots
A baking sheet lined with parchment paper
An oven
Hot pads
A spatula
A jar and label
And if you're working with fresh roots, you'll need a cutting board and a knife or ulu to cut them up.

Welcome to Making Monday with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown today I'm going to demonstrate how to make Aloe Gel.
Making gel is easy and great to have on hand for healing cuts and burns.
To make gel from Aloe you will need:
Fresh Aloe leaves
1/4 teaspoon Citric Acid
A sharp knife
Cutting board
A small cup that the Aloe leaf will fit in
Vegetable peeler
Blender
Measuring spoon
Bottle
Label
Begin by selecting an Aloe leaf that is plump and bulging out instead of inward on the top part of the leaf. It’s best to select a leaf near the bottom of the plant to prevent the plant from becoming stressed.
Trim the bottom portion of the leaf off and place the leaf cut side down in the jar to drain off for about 10 minutes. If you will not be ingesting the gel you can skip this step.
Place the leaf on the cutting board and carefully cut down the sides to remove the teeth. Turn the leaf so the flat side(bottom) is facing up and peel off using the vegetable peeler.
Use the spoon to scoop out the inner gel and place the gel into the blender. If you are using a stick blender, place the gel in a bowl.
Once you have removed all the gel from the leaf, compost the outer portions. Add 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid to the gel and blend until all the gel is broken up. This mixture will be foamy.
Pour into a bottle and label. Store in the fridge and use as needed.
